A Town Hall Meeting for Salem businesses and commercial property owners is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13
th at 7:00 pm at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room located on 4
th Street in Salem. This is an opportunity for business people in Salem to identify issues that should be addressed to revitalize our town. Last July, the City of Salem made application to the State of Missouri in response to the governor’s call for proposals to become a DREAM Community for downtown revitalization. Connie Willman of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission has agreed to serve as facilitator for this group discussion. The Economic Development Advisory Committee is organizing this Town Hall meeting.
The search is on again for Missouri farms that have been in the same family 100 years or more. These farms will be recognized in the Missouri Century Farm program, which was launched in the bicentennial year of 1976 as the Missouri Centennial Farm program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In the 1976 program, 2,850 Missouri farm owners were recognized as owning a centennial farm. In 1986 the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and University of Missouri Extension planned a Century Farm program in which 1,080 more farms were recognized. Due to continued interest in the program annual updates are now given each year. Since 1987, an additional 2, 911 farms have been recognized. Last year 186 family farms joined the program. To qualify as a Missouri Century Farm, farms must meet the following guidelines. The same family must have owned the farm for 100 consecutive years or more as of December 31st, 2007. The line of ownership from the original settler or buyer may be through children, grandchildren, siblings, and nephews or nieces, including through marriage or adoption. The farm must be at least 40 acres of the original land acquisition and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income. Applicants certified as owners of a 2007 Missouri Century Farm will be recognized by their local University of Missouri Extension office in the county where the farm is located. Application forms and information are available through Extension Publications, 2800 Maguire Blvd., Columbia, MO 65211, through your local Extension office or on the web site from February 1st through June 1st. A $30 fee is required to cover the cost of certificates, farm signs, and booklets for approved applicants if you apply by May 15th. If applying between May 16th and June 1st, the cost increases to $ 40.00. Applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2007. The Missouri Century Farm program is jointly administered by the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and University of Missouri Extension. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced a change to the speed limit on Martin Springs Drive, in Rolla, Mo. Following installation of signs featuring the new speed limits, which is scheduled to occur by February 16th, 2007, a speed of 35 miles per hour will be posted within city limits, increasing to 45 miles per hour outside Rolla. Both Phelps County and MoDOT have agreed to the speed limit changes in order to provide greater consistency in the area. Currently, the speed transitions several times between 35 and 55 miles per hour based on state and county maintenance boundaries. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded a highway-resurfacing contract on Route 63 that begins north of the Texas County line and continues 10.2 miles to Route 32 in Licking. The contract was awarded to Ozark Asphalt Company, of West Plains, at a cost of approximately $1,262,138. The contractor can begin work in March 2007 with and estimated completion in October 2007. The Salem Senior Center will have their annual Valentine’s Dinner on Monday from 5:00 to 6:30 with a hog roast dinner. The cost is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Following the dinner will be an auction to help raise funds for homebound meal deliveries starting at 7:00.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers captured third place in the St. James Tournament as they beat Fatima in the makeup game last night by the score of 75 to 62. Salem was led in scoring by Cody Wofford with 21 points while Matt Whitaker and C.J. Smith added eleven points each. Taylor Sirois scored ten points and pulled down ten rebounds. Salem is now 12-9 on the year and they will face the Mountain Grove Panthers tonight in a key SCA matchup starting with the JV contest at 6:00. Homecoming will then be held tonight between the game with the varsity contest starting at about 7:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers are seeded fourth in the Districts coming up in Owensville starting on Tuesday, February 20th. Salem will face St. James in the first round of the playoffs at 6:00. If Salem would win, they would face the Owensville Dutchmen on Thursday night, February 22nd at 6:00.
Manny Legace left late in the second period after being skated into, but Curtis Sanford came on strong in relief to finish off the shutout, the first suffered by Detroit in more than three years, and a fluke goal by Bill Guerin was all the Blues would need to top the Red Wings, 1-0. The Red Wings were last shutout in a 3-0 loss to Boston on Jan. 7, 2004, a 175-game streak that was the longest active run in the NHL. Legace stopped 10 shots, and Sanford turned away 13 for the Blues, who had lost four of five entering the contest. This was the first combined shutout for the Blues since Nov. 5 of 1970. The Blues will be in Philadelphia on Saturday night at 6:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Craig League of Salem, age 86 will be held Saturday at 2:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
