The Presidential Primaries were held on Tuesday and 1,091 of the 8,605 (12.68%) registered voters in Dent County cast their vote. There were 152 votes cast on the Democratic ballot and Barack Obama received 113 of them. He was followed by Randall Terry with 10 votes and Darcy G. Richardson and John Wolfe, both receiving 4 votes. There were 21 uncommitted votes on the Democratic side. There were a total of 937 votes cast on the Republican side and Rick Santorum came out with the most with 546. He was followed by Mitt Romney with 189 and Ron Paul with 120. Herman Cain received 14 votes, Rick Perry got 9, Michelle Bachman garnered 8 votes, and Gary Johnson and Michael J. Meehan both received 4 votes. Jon Huntsman received a single vote and there were 42 uncommitted votes on the Republican ballot. The Libertarian and Constitution Parties each had a vote cast, both being uncommitted votes.

The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that materials would be added to Dent County Roads 5190, 6370 and 5380. He said that brush cutter #5 and Dent County Truck #115 are both having hydraulic problems and are being repaired by county workers. He went on to say that workers are repairing or replacing downed signs on Dent County Roads 5380 and 5580. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 3185 and 3190; and that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 4280. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3180. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a CCAM board meeting where they discussed the updated training for county commissioners and also went over legislative issues. Skiles indicated that all three Dent County Commissioners attended the three-day mandatory and statutory CCAM training in Jefferson City. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that only four people voted absentee Saturday for the Primary election. The next meeting for the Dent County Commissioners would be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association is proud to announce the nominees for the 2012 “Gift of Time” Volunteer Recognition. Individual nominees are Stan Podorski, Alan Benowitz, Bob Gravely, Larry Gray, Deloris Gray Wood and Dennis Hayman. Nominated organizations include the Salem TCRC Partners, the Council for a Healthy Dent County, the Dent County 4-H Shooting Sports Leaders and the Council for a Healthy Dent County – Babysitters Academy Faculty. All nominees and awardees will be honored at the 11^th Annual “Gift of Time” Banquet to be held on Thursday, February 16^th. The event begins 6:30 pm at the Grace Community Church “Gathering Place” and will be catered by the Brick House Grill. The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, January 29^th at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of North Pershing in reference to tampering with a vehicle. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took several lug nuts off the wheels of a maroon 2003 Dodge truck. Later that evening at 6:05, an officer was dispatched to Highway 32 and Macarthur in reference to an accident. The investigation led to the arrest of a 65-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, January 30^th at 3:30 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of Hogan Lane in reference to a methamphetamine lab dumpsite. Officers responded and located the remnants of a functional methamphetamine lab. The chemical lab was seized and turned over to detectives for further investigation. Later that evening at 5:30, an officer was contacted at the police station in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that someone threw oils, sodas, and eggs on a vehicle as well as put nails in a driveway causing flat tires. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 48-year old Salem female for tampering with a motor vehicle. She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. Later on the night at 9:35, an officer was dispatched to the 1300 block of South Gertrude in reference to a domestic assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 32-year old Salem male had assaulted a 25-year old Salem female. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, January 31^st at 6:32 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $19.58. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Rotary Club is sponsoring their annual Pancake Day on Saturday, February 11^th from 7:00 to 11:00 am at the William Lynch Elementary School. The cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children age 12 and under. Everyone is invited to come out and help support Pancake Day. Proceeds from Pancake Day go towards the Rotary Club Scholarship fund.
