The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular Monday meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that workers would be out removing snow and ice where they can, and also putting down sand and salt for traction in various locations that are still frozen. Commissioner Larson also said that District 2 has a grader broken down and that John Deere has been contacted for repairs. This repair is under warranty. Larson is going to go to Jefferson City to pick up snowplow blades that have been on order, but if the area gets more snow through Wednesday, the county may need these additional blades. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that the National Forest and Mineral receipts have come in for the 2010-year and they are up $26,036.05 more than the 2009-year receipts. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she and Dent County Treasurer, Denita Williams, balanced on accounts. Curley is currently preparing the county financial statements to be published in the Salem News, plus she had the personal property and real estate tax abatements ready for the commissioners to review. The commissioners also approved the request from Dent County Coroner Gina White for the purchase of a 2000-2005 Suburban type SUV with four-wheel drive for use by the coroner. Bids will be opened at the commissioner meeting on February 17^th at 10:00. The funds for the purchase of the SUV will come from the Law Enforcement Restitution Fund. At the last meeting, the commissioners went to the sheriff’s department to view the water problem on a wall and to look at the cabinets. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met for their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. Molly Malone from Verkamp and Malone, CPA was not in attendance to discuss the audit of the city for 2009-2010 and should be at the next meeting. The board approved the bid from Schafer’s Trailers of Salem for an 18-foot flatbed bumper pull trailer for the recycling program for $3,550. The trailer will be paid for from the $19,0000 grant proceeds approved for the city from the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District. After the consent agenda was approved, Mayor Gary Brown recommended the low local bid of $32,103 from C & E Auto on the 2011 Ford F-350 Chassis with cab, but the board failed to make a motion after another discussion about the truck was big enough to accommodate the needs of the Water and Sewer Department. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs told the board the University Extension wanted to set up a one-day seminar to discuss economic development in conjunction with the DED in March or April, but the board made no commitment. She also presented the board with a new recycling brochure for Salem. Mayor Brown said that MoDOT took out the flashing red light at Franklin and McArthur, and they told him that the reason they didn’t get McArthur plowed off very well was because they were short a man and a truck. The Mayor said that the snow and ice storm from last Tuesday, and the snow from Saturday took 224 hours of standard labor time and 140 hours of overtime using three dump trucks with spreaders, and a grader. The cost of the materials was $14,277 and fuel costs were another $645. The mayor said that even though Governor Nixon said there was a State of Emergency, only areas that were hit with “historic” levels of snow would be reimbursed. Brown said that finance and utility committee meetings would be held on February 15^th and the 17^th respectively, at a time to be determined. He also said that the next meeting of the aldermen would be held on Tuesday, February 22^nd. Alderman Kenny Nash brought out that the left turn signal at the Highway 32 and McArthur intersection had been turned off and two accidents have occurred there. He also inquired about the building of a cover for the sludge pad at the water department and the mayor said that he would like to get bids, as a contractor would probably build it faster. Alderman Powell asked about using the larger dump truck from the cemetery for the Water and Sewer Department, and then get a smaller dump truck for the cemetery. The mayor will have to check with the attorney to see if that is possible as that truck was purchased using funds from the Cemetery fund which would prohibit it’s use anywhere else. The board approved Resolution #1-2011 adopting an official written investment policy for the city of Salem that establishes the guidelines and requirements for investing. The board then heard the first readings of Bills #3213, 3214, 3215, 3216 and 3217 amending previous ordinances to establish a definitive time of service for each of those positions. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.
