An accident occurred at 5:24 Friday evening in Dent County on Highway 19 about one mile south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup driven by 31- year old Chrystal Justus of Salem, lost control on the snow covered roadway. The pickup then crossed the centerline and struck a 2001 Chevrolet 3500 pickup driven by 47-year old Scott Warren of Salem in the side. Justus suffered minor injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both were wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 1999 Dodge Ram sustained extensive damage, and the 2001 Chevrolet 3500 sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the accident.

The Department of Natural Resources' Division of Energy has issued $23,138 in weatherization sub-grant funds to the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency to help low income Missourians reduce home energy costs. The South Central Missouri Community Action Agency, or SCMCAA, is one of 18 Missouri agencies that implement the state's Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program, enabling low-income Missouri families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. The elderly, physically disadvantaged and families with children are program priorities. Since the program began in 1978, weatherization funds have helped to weatherize more than 155,000 Missouri homes. SCMCAA serves seven south central Missouri counties: Butler, Carter, Dent, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, and Wayne. The sub-grants to SCMCAA include $3,965 in funding allocated under a service area agreement with AmerenUE Natural Gas, $15,918 from Laclede Gas, and $3,255 from Atmos Gas. This funding is provided through agreements made in rate adjustment cases by Missouri utilities to weatherize additional homes in their service areas. The department's Division of Energy is a non-regulatory state office that works to protect the environment and stimulate the economy through energy efficiency and renewable energy resources and technologies. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their monthly Chamber meeting on Wednesday, February 10^th. Due to a scheduling conflict it will take place this month at My Place Restaurant. The cost is $8.00 per person and they do ask that you RSVP no later than today by calling 729-6900 or going by 200 South Main. The guest speaker will be Alex Withrow, a counselor at Salem Senior High School speaking on how and when to begin preparing our youth for college.

An accident occurred at 4:45 Friday morning in Phelps County on County Road 2030 about one and a half miles northeast of Rolla. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1990 Jeep driven by 26 year-old Derick Morton of St. James traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree, and then a fence. He then struck another tree, traveled through the fence, and struck two stumps. He then reversed through the fence and back onto the roadway. After traveling a short distance, he traveled off the right side of the roadway and came to a rest. Morton suffered minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep sustained moderate damages and was removed from the scene by the owner.

An accident occurred at 12:25 Friday afternoon in Crawford County on Route ZZ about six miles west of Cuba. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1997 Ford Expedition driven by 31 year-old Nicole Bell of Steelville lost control on the partially covered roadway and traveled off the south side of the roadway and overturned. Nicole Bell suffered moderate injuries and was taken by St. James ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. An occupant in the vehicle, 27 year-old James Bell of Steelville, suffered minor injuries and was taken by North Crawford ambulance to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Expedition sustained extensive damage and was removed from scene by Miles and Son’s Towing of Cuba.

There will be a Sweetheart Benefit Banquet in support of Show-Me-Hope on Friday, February 12^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium starting at 6:00. The dinner will be catered by Seasons-N-Thyme. Tickets are available at the Bank of Salem, Town and Country Bank and US Bank for $20 per person or two tickets for $35. Tickets MUST be purchased by noon on TODAY.
