The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce had their February board meeting yesterday and elected two new officers. The new president is Dustin Howard and the new Vice President is Shirley Larson. The Treasurer will be announced within the next couple of weeks. The next membership meeting will be Wednesday at noon at the Salem TCRC with Dwayne Cartwright of Intercounty Electric the guest speaker. Lunch will be catered by the newest Chamber Member, “Triple Creek BBQ and Catering at a cost of $7.00 per person. Please RSVP today if you plan to attend to be included in the lunch count. Captain Luke Vislay, director of the Division of Drug and Crime Control, announced the 2007 criminal investigation enforcement statistics for the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and the statewide methamphetamine incident totals. During 2007, 120 employees were assigned to the Division of Drug and Crime Control, 90 of whom are law enforcement officers called upon to conduct a wide range of criminal investigations across the state. The division assists and supports local, county, and federal agencies in the investigation of crimes and is committed to providing effective and professional assistance. The 30 civilian employees are utilized in investigation and support roles. The Division of Drug and Crime Control was established in 1983, and operates throughout the state of Missouri under the guidelines set forth in Chapter 43 of the Revised Missouri Statutes. The 2007 Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratory totals have been released from the Midwest HIDTA office in Jefferson City, and Missouri leads the nation again in the total number of Meth laboratory incidents. The first half of 2007 showed a continued downward trend, but the second half of the year indicated a rise in seizures. This trend demonstrates that smurfing (going from pharmacy to pharmacy to purchase pseudoephedrine) is occurring as the methamphetamine cooks become comfortable with the pseudoephedrine law. Missouri was the top state with 1,285 meth lab incidents followed by Indiana with 620, Tennessee with 559, Illinois with 360 and Arkansas with 309. The top five counties in Missouri were: Jefferson with 218, St. Charles with 106, St. Francois with 96, Lincoln with 53 and Franklin with 50. In the immediate area, Dent County reported only one Meth lab incident in 2007 while there 13 in Crawford County, 16 in Shannon County, 23 in Reynolds County, four in Iron County, six in Texas County and five in Phelps County. These incidents include laboratories, chemical/equipment/or glassware seizures and dumpsites that have been received by the Missouri State Highway Patrol for entry into their database.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways is pleased to announce that construction of a new visitor contact facility pavilion and ranger station at Pulltite was slated to begin the last week of January 2007. Compliance for this project was completed. The Midwest Regional Director of the National Park Service signed the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Environmental Assessment (EA) on November 28, 2007. The new 1,050 square foot visitor contact station will include visitor interpretive services, ranger and maintenance office space, modern restrooms, and ADA-accessible showers. Work on the project is expected to be completed by mid-summer 2008.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime last night to the Newburg Lady Wolves in the semi-final of the Newburg Tournament by the score of 50-47. Salem had the chance to win the game in regulation and missed a short shot as time expired. Hannah Kettner had 18 points for Salem as the Tigers will play Fatima Saturday night in the 3rd place game at 5:00. Salem’s record falls to 16-6 on the year with the loss.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be back in action tonight as they travel to Mountain Grove to face the Panthers in SCA Play. Salem is 16-6 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. The Missouri Tigers will be back in action as they will host Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Arena. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 13-10 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Big 12.
The St. Louis Blues will be Dallas Saturday night to face the Stars at 7:00 before playing Minnesota Sunday afternoon at the Scottrade Center at 5:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio. The Blues have lost eight of their last ten games.
There will be a Spring Soccer sign-ups for boys and girls ages 10-15 years of age. Registration will be held on Saturday February 9th from 9:00 am-2:00 pm at P'zaz Hair Salon located at 108 W. 4th St. Downtown Salem. The Kansas City Royals signed right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke and outfielder Mark Teahen to one-year contracts Thursday, avoiding arbitration with both players. The 24-year-old Greinke went 7-7 with a 3.69 ERA in 2007, making 14 starts and appearing in 52 games in total. In his four major league seasons - all with Kansas City - Greinke has compiled a 21-35 record and a 4.63 ERA in 112 games. Teahen, 26, hit .285 with seven home runs and 60 RBI last season, following up a career-best 2006 campaign, when he hit .290 with 18 homers and drove in 69 runs. The left-handed-hitting third baseman-turned-outfielder has a .274 average over three seasons, all spent with the Royals.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Memorials are suggested to the Fairhaven Children's Home in Strafford or the Sunshine & Rainbow Day School in Licking.
Funeral services for Dorothy Pearl Hanger of Salem, age 92, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Christian Cemetery in Fredricktown on Tuesday.
