The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to go over approved budget item transfers. Transfers included: $4,000 from Prosecuting Attorney Bad Check Fund to General Revenue, $39,000 from General Revenue to Assessment Operating Fund, $130,000 from General Revenue to Road and Bridge Fund, $35,665.78 from 9-1-1 Fund to Law Enforcement Sales Tax, $18,842.10 from Sheriff Revolving Fund to Law Enforcement Sales Tax and $5,000 from Prisoner Inmate Detainee Fund to Law Enforcement Sales Tax. Williams also noted that in March she would be transferring $18,625 to three different funds. That transfer breakdown would be $11,250 to Salem Nutrition, $6,125 to SMTS and $1,250 to the Agency on Aging. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that his crews were continuing to remove snow and treat slick spots. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said his crews were grading snow off roadways and spreading salt on slick spots. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind citizens today is the last day to comment on the ONSR Draft Management Plan proposals. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that her office has prepared the 2013 Financial Statement, which will be printed in the Salem News, has balanced with the treasurer on all accounts for January, and the Commissioners are reviewing the reports. Curley went on to say that she had the monthly collections, abatements and add-ons to be reviewed by the Commissioners.  Curley also stated that propane bids had been taken by phone and the lowest bid was $3.14 by Amerigas/Titan, which was approved by the Commission. The Commissioners voted to pay the bills. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s office has released a report. On Monday, January 27^th, deputies responded to the 1000 block of Highway 119 for a reported domestic assault. The subject, later identified as Daniel Rictor, fled from the residence upon the deputies arrival. During a subsequent search, Rictor was located nearby and arrested. Rictor was issued a summons for 3^rd degree Domestic Assault, and placed on a 12-hour hold in the Dent County Jail. Rictor was released upon the expiration of the 12-hour hold with a scheduled court appearance on March 6^th, 2014.

Volunteers for AARP will be conducting free tax filing assistance at the Salem Community Center@ the Armory computer lab this year.  This free tax filing assistance will begins today and will continue every Friday until April 11^th. Appointments may be made by calling the Salem Community Center at 729-8163. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040. However, the Volunteer Protection Act requires that our volunteers stay in the scope of the program. If counselors feel they do not have adequate knowledge or your return is too complex, persons may need to seek another qualified counselor or paid tax assistance. Here are the items you will need to bring with you to have your tax returns prepared: Proof of identification such as a picture ID; Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration, or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents. You must also provide birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return; Wage and earning statement(s) including Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers; Year-end Social Security Statements showing total SS received and Medicare payments; interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099); a copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available; and proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check. You should also provide the total amount paid for a daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number) if appropriate, if applicable. Finally, to file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, the commanding officer of Troop I, announces officers will again team up with law enforcement agencies in seven other states in the “Get Your ‘Clicks’ On Route 66” seat belt crackdown today. The quarterly mobilization began in August 2010, with a handful of law enforcement agencies in Central Oklahoma, but now has expanded to include highway patrol troopers, state police officers and other agencies in eight states along the famed “Mother Road.” The wearing of seat belts by drivers and passengers in vehicles is one of the best ways to prevent death and personal injury when involved in a traffic crash. The effectiveness of using seat belts becomes apparent when considering the following: A driver in a 2012 Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 27 chance of being killed if they were not wearing a seat belt. In those crashes where a driver wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,201. States taking part in the crackdown today include Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
