A re-visit from the State Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) on January 30th found the Salem Memorial District Hospital to be 100% in compliance with licensing regulations regarding documentation of pressure ulcers. Surveyor, Vanessa Huskey, with the Department of Health and Senior Services said, “You have a great plan of correction. Your documentation is now perfect.” Director of Nursing Carol Lacy said, “We are very pleased to have this corrected. SMDH has always scored very well with our licensing surveys and we attribute that to the dedication of our staff to provide the best possible care. This is accomplished through on-going assessment, early detection of resident needs and physician ordered intervention.” Lacy indicated corrective actions that have been taken include re-education of all nurses and nurse assistants regarding pressure ulcer risk assessment, prevention, stage identification and proper documentation. Lacy said, “We also implemented revisions to our documentation format and increased our surveillance by nursing management through direct patient contact, visual skin assessments and review of documentation.” Lacy stated, “It is our privilege to care for the residents of Long Term Care and we will continue to provide them with the best possible care.”
Turkey hunters have until February 28th to apply for managed hunts during Missouri’s 2013 spring turkey season. A list of all 19 managed turkey hunts and application instructions are available at mdc.mo.gov. In addition to 10 hunts open to all firearms turkey hunters, this year’s offerings include a managed hunt for archers, seven hunts for youths ages 11 through 15, and one hunt for people with disabilities. Managed hunts will take place during the youth turkey season, April 6th and 7th, or the regular turkey season, April 15th through May 5th. Hunters may apply individually or in groups of up to three for most hunts. Youth hunts accept applications only for single hunters or pairs. An individual applying as a member of a party has the same chance of being drawn as someone who applies alone. Successful applicants will receive notice of their hunt dates and other information by mail. Drawing results will be posted March 15th through May 5th at mdc.mo.gov. Participation in managed turkey hunts is free. Hunters may apply for only one hunt. Participants in some hunts must complete a pre-hunt orientation. Hunters should not apply for these hunts if they cannot attend the orientation. The bag limit for managed hunts is one male turkey or turkey with visible beard. Turkeys taken during a managed hunt count toward the season limit of two. Hunters who shoot a turkey during a managed hunt before April 23rd may not take another turkey during the first week of the regular turkey season. All-terrain vehicles are prohibited on areas with managed turkey hunts.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for a couple of incidents. On Tuesday, January 29th at 10:55 in the evening, an officer responded to a residence in the 1600 block of Doss Road in reference to a missing person. The investigation revealed that a 17-year old Salem male, under a court order, left a residence and had not returned at an appointed time. On Thursday, January 31st at 9:20 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen credit card. That investigation revealed that someone used the credit card of another to withdraw $40 cash from an ATM. An accident occurred at 8:40 Tuesday evening in Dent County on Highway HH about three miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 16-year old Amelia McGuirk of Salem was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southbound when the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway, down an embankment, and overturned. McGuirk suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Monte Carlo was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The 5th seeded Salem Lady Tiger basketball team will be playing top seeded Licking in the second round of the Newburg Tournament tonight. Salem is 9-11 on the year and that game gets underway at 7:00.
The Salem Tiger Baseball team will play Mattoon, Illinois at Busch Stadium on Sunday, June 2nd after the Cardinals/Giants game. Ticket prices are $25.00 and include the Cards/Giants game that begins at 1:15pm and then the Salem Tiger game. They have three hours to play the game. This is an exciting opportunity for our baseball team. The original ticket prices for these seats are $53. Tickets will be sold at the remaining boys and girls home basketball games and also can be purchased at the Salem TCRC, located in the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The St. Louis Blues will be looking to stop their first losing streak of the season tonight when they host the Detroit Red Wings at 6:30. The Blues are 6-3-0 on the season and KSMO will broadcast the 1st period live then bring you the 3rd period following the Missouri game.
The 21st-ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will be playing at Texas A&M tonight at 8:00. Missouri is 16-5 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
St. Louis Blues right wing Vladimir Tarasenko has been named the NHL's top rookie for the month of January. Tarasenko led all rookies in scoring with nine points, tallying five goals and four assists in seven games. The 21-year-old Russian native was selected with the 16th overall pick of the 2010 draft.
