The Salem Police Department released their reports involving, a city warrant, shoplifting, a traffic stop and driving while intoxicated. On Wednesday, January 26th at 10:36 at night, an officer made contact with a 47-year old Salem male in the 1300 block of East Second Street in reference to a City of Salem warrant. He was taken into custody and incarcerated at the Dent County Jail. On Thursday, January 27th at 6:46 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The officer’s investigation of the report led to the detention of a 12-year old male juvenile for stealing $60.92 in merchandise. He was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile office for further review. On Friday, January 28th at 3:00 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to another shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year-old female of Mexico, Missouri for stealing merchandise valued at $600. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that same afternoon at 4:06, an officer was sent to the corner of Water and Bryan Streets in reference to a vehicle that slid off in the ditch.  The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 60-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was incarcerated pending a warrant application. At 8:20 that evening, an officer made contact with a 25-year old Salem female who had an active warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and was later released after a guilty plea and paying the fine and costs. Later that same evening at 8:50, an officer conducted a traffic stop in lieu of an active warrant for the driver. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 43-year old Salem male on an active warrant from Texas County and possession of marijuana. He was incarcerated pending extradition from Texas County. Please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242 if you have any information regarding an ongoing investigation.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After the approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Molly Malone with Verkamp & Malone CPA’s will give a report to the Board on the 2009/2010 audit for the city. During bids, the city had previously requested bids for an 18’ flatbed bumper pull trailer for the recycling program. The Board will review the bids and the purchase will be from grant money received through the MRPC. In unfinished business, the city had previously requested bids for a 2011 Ford F350 4X4 chassis/cab with a 9-foot 2.7-yard dump body 60” C.A. dual rear wheel cab chassis. A total of $35,000 has been budgeted for the item and the Board will review the bids presented. Mayor Gary Brown will then give the public works reports. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #1-2011 a resolution, will be presented, that is required to adopt an investment policy, which is recommended by Verkamp & Malone CPA’s. Then Bill’s #3213, 3214, 3215, 3216 and 3217, which are ordinances to amend other ordinances for the City of Salem regarding appointments of the Director of Economic Development, City Clerk, Chief of Police, City of Salem Attorney, and Director of Public Works respectively will be presented. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Missouri’s 2010-2011 archery deer harvest dipped by 17 percent, following a trend seen during the various portions of firearms deer season. The fall turkey harvest also declined. Bow hunters checked 43,281 deer during the archery deer and turkey season Sept. 15 through Nov. 12 and Nov. 24 through Jan. 15. That is 8,691 fewer than during the 2009-10 archery season, which set a record high. Top archery deer harvest counties were Jackson with 980, St. Louis with 898 and Jefferson with 876. The combined 2010-11 firearms and archery deer harvests total 274,794, a decrease of 8 percent. Resource Scientist Lonnie Hansen, the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) deer expert, attributed the decrease in archery deer harvest to the same factors that held down the 2010-2011 firearms deer harvest. Archers shot 25 percent fewer deer in the Ozark Region during the 2010-11 season than the previous season. The Ozark Region firearms deer harvest was down 21 percent from the previous season. Overall, the Ozarks’ 2010-11 deer harvest was down 22 percent. Bow hunters checked 13 percent fewer deer in northeastern Missouri during the 2010-11 season. However, the firearms deer harvest was up 3 percent in the region. The combined archery and firearms harvest in the northeast region topped the 2009-10 figure by a narrow margin, just 235 deer. The 2010-2011 archery turkey harvest was 2,184, down from 3,298 the previous season. Top harvest counties during the archery season were Greene with 66, Texas with 46 and Franklin with 43. The total harvest from the 2010 youth and regular spring hunts, the fall firearms season and archery season was 54,311, down 3.7 percent from 2009-10.
