The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will honor volunteer citizens and organizations who significantly enhance the quality of our community’s life at the “Gift of Time” Awards Banquet and Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to the held on Tuesday, February 26th at The Commons starting at 6:30 pm. Gift of Time individual nominees are: Bob Brendell, Bobbie Culver, Warren DuBois, Frank Grosspietsch, Dustin Howard, David Massengale, Bill Strain, Lou Trombley and Dr. Steve Watson. Gift of Time organizations are: the Dent County Fire District Board of Directors, the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit Board of Directors, Faith Assembly Mission, Friends of NRS Banquet Committee, Shepherd’s Nook, Silver Servants and the Spring Creek Garden Club. Tickets are available at the Salem News, The Visitor’s Center and from individual Salem Area Community Betterment Association Board members at a cost of $20 per ticket.

The City of Salem’s Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, today at 1:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers. The Finance Committee will meet to review a 6-month financial and also to discuss the rate increase from Sho-Me-Power. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

The February Chamber of Commerce membership meeting will be held at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at noon on Wednesday, February 13th. New Board Officers are to be elected at this meeting and Intercounty Electric General Manager Dwayne Cartwright will be the guest speaker. Lunch will be catered by the newest Chamber Member, “Triple Creek BBQ and Catering at a cost of $7.00 per person. Please RSVP no later the Friday February 8th is you plan to attend to be included in the lunch count. Call 729-6900.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of January. During the month, they wrote 17 traffic tickets, 29 warning tickets and four equipment repair orders. They served 25 summons to appear in court and four fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 13 accidents, five assaults, two domestic assaults, and four reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 14 reports of stealing, two reports of property damage, two burglaries, one report of a forgery, one report of a missing or runaway juvenile, one report of sexual misconduct, one report of a lost or stolen plate, and one report of disorderly conduct. They also investigated three reports of possession of marijuana.  The police received 1,582 calls for service during the month, handled 121 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 51 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 30 hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff, and spent 8 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in January included 33 calls for escorts, five 9-1-1 calls, five intoxicated driver investigation calls, one call for peace disturbance, 10 ambulance assist calls, four calls for alarms sounding, two calls for fights in progress, four domestic dispute calls, three calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, and four fire calls. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 13,963 miles during the month of January. The Salem Police Department arrested 22 males and 12 females during the month of January.

Tuesday night, the Salem Lady Tigers defeated the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers by the score of 42-24. Salem was led by Allison Jones with 12 points and Hannah Kettner with 10 points. Salem is now 16-5 on the year and they are 4-1 in the SCA. They will face Newburg tonight in the semi-final of the Newburg Tournament and that game will start at 8:30 tonight.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers have been seeded second in district play behind St. Clair. District play will begin the week of February 18th. They will be at Mountain Grove tomorrow night for another key SCA contest. Salem is 3-1 in the SCA.

There will be a Spring Soccer sign-ups for boys and girls ages 10-15 years of age. Registration will be held on Saturday February 9th from 9:00 am-2:00 pm at P'zaz Hair Salon located at 108 W. 4th St. Downtown Salem. Bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate if you have never played in the Rolla League before. Registration forms are also available at P'zaz Hair Salon Tuesday thru Fridays until February 20th. The Phoenix Suns made a bold move to bolster their frontcourt on Wednesday, acquiring 14-time All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal from the Miami Heat in exchange for forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks. O'Neal needed to undergo a physical before the deal became official. He flew to Phoenix on Wednesday for tests on his ailing left hip -- an injury that has forced him to miss the last two weeks. Despite the recent injury, Suns head coach Mike D'Antoni and team general manager Steve Kerr indicated O'Neal would make dramatic improvements.

Funeral services for Betty Lou Shorter of Rolla, age 68, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the New Life Ministries in Evening Shade. Interment will be in the Palace Union Cemetery in Evening Shade. Memorials are suggested to the New Life Ministries of Evening Shade, MO. Funeral services for Erma Harrison of St. James, age 87, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the High Gate Cemetery in High Gate Missouri. Memorials are suggested to the High Gate Cemetery Fund.

Funeral services for Robert Washburn of St. James, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the James Memorial Cemetery in Maries County.

Funeral services for Howard Chandler of Viburnum, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Funeral services for Charles E. Spencer of Rolla, age 94, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Foundation for the Blind.

Memorial services for Lyle Robert Jeffers of Steelville, age 66, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Masonic Hall in Steelville and on Sunday at 2:00 at the Community Christian Church in Manchester, MO. Memorials are suggested to the Steelville Food Pantry or the Circle of Concern in Valley Park, MO. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton Bennett Funeral Home.
