Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) is pleased to announce the nominees for the Gift of Time awards that will be presented on Tuesday, February 11^th at the Gathering Place at the Grace Community Church at 6:30. The nominee honor roll for volunteer work done in 2013 includes these persons and organizations: for Education, Doyle Lakes and his family were nominated; for Community Enhancement, Larry Gray, Tina Pierce and Bonnie Darling and the City of Salem Park Board have been nominated; for Humanitarianism, nominated were Michael Helm, Melissa Hayes and the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center Teen Mother Crossroads Mentors; the R-80 National Honor Society was nominated for Youth; and Tod Kinerk was nominated for Historic Preservation. All nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner on Tuesday, February 11^th, with the Gift of Time awards presented to those persons or groups selected for their outstanding work. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m.  Tickets may be purchased at the Salem TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members for $20.00. The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of January. During the month, they wrote four equipment repair orders, 17 summons to appear in court, 30 warning tickets, and 36 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 14 accidents, one report of armed criminal action, two assaults, one burglary, one report of child molestation, two reports of disorderly conduct, three reports of domestic assault, four reports of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked and/or suspended, two reports of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of felonious restraint, one report of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit device, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated one report of a missing and/or runaway juvenile, four reports of property damage, one report of statutory sodomy, 11 reports of stealing, two reports of tampering, one report of unlawful possession of a firearm and one report of unlawful use of a weapon. They also investigated two reports of possession of drugs amphetamine, and two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia.  The police department received 1,697 calls for service during the month, handled 117 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 51 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying, five hours as court bailiff and spent 20 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in January included 19 calls for escorts, two calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for prowlers, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, nine calls for domestic disputes, and seven calls for a wrecker. There were five 911 calls, two calls for a peace disturbance, 10 calls for alarms sounding, two calls for fights in progress, 11 ambulance assist calls, two fire calls and one call for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,952 miles and arrested 15 males and 8 females during the month of January.

If you’re interested in learning how to use fire as a land management tool, attend the Missouri Department of Conservation’s prescribed burn workshop from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on February 13 at the USDA Service Center in Rolla. The USDA Service Center is located at 1050 Highway 72 East in the city of Rolla. This free workshop is for landowners interested in learning how to properly and safely conduct prescribed burns on their property to improve wildlife habitat. The end result of the burning process can lead to better grazing opportunities for livestock and greater plant diversity, which creates better wildlife habitat. An accident occurred at 1:45 Wednesday afternoon in Phelps County on the North Outer Road about two miles west of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, 32-year old Philip Wilson of St. James was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee east when he ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the roadway, and then overturned. Wilson and an occupant, 38-year old Jennifer Nash of St. James, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by St. James ambulance.

An accident occurred at 2:45 Wednesday afternoon in Crawford County on Old 66 about three miles east of Cuba. According to the highway patrol report, 45-year old Curtis Dunakey of Leasburg was driving a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville west when he lost control on the snow covered roadway, ran off the road, struck a sign, and then struck a tree. Dunakey suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage.
