An accident Friday afternoon at 12:10 in Franklin County on Interstate 44 at 236-mile marker left one woman dead and three others injured. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Dodge Ram driven by 68-year old Judith Twente of St. James was attempting to merge on Interstate 44 westbound from the rest area at the 236-mile marker when the Ram began sliding on the wet pavement. Twente over-corrected and the undercarriage of the Ram struck the pavement at the merge lane causing the Ram to overturn and travel off the left side of the roadway. The Ram came to rest on its top facing eastbound. The St. Clair Ambulance personnel pronounced Twente dead at the scene, and her body was transported by the Russell Colonial Funeral Home to the St. Louis County Morgue. Suffering serious injuries was a passenger, 25-year old Dominque Gilliam of Rolla and she was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Her two children, six-year old Blake Gilliam and four-year old Lucas Gilliam suffered minor injuries and were also taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. The Dodge Ram was totaled and removed from the scene by Vogelsang’s Towing.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 8:00 in Reynolds County on Highway 72 about two miles east of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Ranger driven by 19- year old Matthew Benton of Bunker, ran off the right side of the roadway then overcorrected causing the Ranger to overturn. Benton suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Reynolds County Ambulance to the Advanced Healthcare Hospital in Ellington. Benton was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Ranger was totaled and removed from the scene by Hills Body Shop of Ellington.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman will update the Board on current and future projects involving the city. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will update the Board on miscellaneous items involving the city. The City of Salem Alderman Jerry Randell, Kenneth Nash, Haydn Powell and Phillip Giacomelli will address various issues before Mayor Gary Brown gives his report. In New and Miscellaneous Business, the term of Mrs. Rose Kinerk will expire as of February 15, 2012 and the Board of Commissioners of the Salem Housing Authority recommends that Mrs. Kinerk be re-appointed for a term of four years effective February 16, 2012. Mrs. Kinerk has stated that she would gladly accept the re-appointment. City Administrator Clayton Lucas is requesting approval from the Board to pay three purchase orders. The first is for $11,388.75 to Midwest Hydro to repair and inspect the pump in Well #8; the second is for $3,117.60 to Fletcher-Reinhardt for supplies for line work on the City’s electrical system and thirdly, an order for $3,710.00 to I R B Y for wire for the line work in the Electric Department. Lucas is requesting approval to go out on bid to purchase a service truck for the Water Department. The amount should not exceed $14,500. The original budget amount for this purchase was $15,000, however, because the other budgeted truck for the Water Department had a purchase price of $15,500, the had to lower the budgeted amount for this truck. He will then request approval to put out for bid the sell of three City vehicles. Those vehicles include: a 1995 Chevy ¾ ton pickup; a 1998 Ford F150 4X4 ½ ton pickup and a CAT 70-foot Bucket Truck with a weight of 31,000 pounds. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel and litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

There will be a Missouri Show-Me Quality Assurance meeting on February 23^rd and 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall and it is mandatory for all 4-H/FFA livestock members planning to exhibit any animal at the 2012 Expo. This includes small animal projects. Livestock members must attend one of the two Dent County Quality Assurance meetings. There will be no make-up dates, unless it is cancelled due to bad weather. If a livestock member cannot attend either of these two meetings, they must contact the Extension office for dates and locations of meetings available in other counties.
