The Salem Park Board held a meeting Tuesday at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The board discussed the condition of the Al Brown and City Park Fields in preparation of the upcoming softball and baseball leagues. Parks Director Greg Nash stated that there were some high traffic areas that were in need of attention as far as seeding in the outfield areas of the softball fields. He also said the infields at Al Brown and City Park Fields are in need of topdressing and he is getting bids to see what the costs would be to work on these areas. He stated that the ditch at the City Park fields had been covered and asphalted to the east of the t-ball fields and would help with the parking issues that were dealt with last summer during the ball leagues. The batting cages were also discussed and it is hoped that they can be built this spring so they can be used this year. Nash reported that sign-ups would be held around the first to middle of March, but the exact dates will be announced at a later time. The season is scheduled to start around the middle of May and run through the end of June. The board also decided to include 13-year olds to see what kind of interest would be generated in hopes to get more kids to participate in the program. Nash reported that last year close to 700 kids participated in the city’s program. Director Nash then reported that there were close to 200 kids from 1st-6th grades participating in the youth basketball program. Because of the increase in kids, additional coaches are needed.  Most of the games and clinics will be held on Saturdays in the high school gymnasium with the practices being held throughout the week at the Freedom Activity Center. Nash then reported on the soccer field DNR grant application that was submitted. He is hoping to hear if the city will be awarded the grant by the middle of April. This grant is the same one that the city used to construct the new little league fields at the City Park. Finally, Nash said that he had concerns about lifeguards this year at the swimming pool as there are not that many returning. He does plan on recruiting lifeguards so that there will be more than just a skeleton crew available. With no further business the meeting then adjourned.
