The City of Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night for their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board heard from Tod Kinerk who was requesting to hold another Timber Day parade on Labor Day through Salem. He complimented the job that the Salem Police Department and Chief Keith Steelman did last year which helped make the parade and Timber Day event a success. The board approved his request. In the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown reported in the water analysis report, water tested over the legal limits of zinc for two days. Both the Department of Natural Resources and Heartland Metals were notified. The problem has been corrected. In his last board meeting as City Administrator, Clayton Lucas reported the transition to Interim City Administrator Ray Walden has gone smoothly. They held a meeting with all the department heads, reviewed the projects that still needed to be done, and received updates on projects already underway. A light pole did fall at Al Brown Fields from the wind and it was found the pole had rotted at the base. Lucas said the insurance company had been contacted. To replace the pole, the city will have to contact Intercounty Electric and utilize their pole digger as the pole is too large for the city equipment to be used to install. Walden did remind the aldermen that the SACBA Gift of Time Awards dinner would be Tuesday, February 11^th at the Gathering Place at Grace Assembly Church and the Salem Park Board had been nominated for an award for community enhancement. Mayor Brown reported MoDOT would be opening bids on Tuesday for the McArthur Street Project. He also said he would be attending a legislative MML conference in Jeff City along with Walden and City Clerk Mary Happel on Tuesday, February 11^th. He said Walden and Happel will return that night, but he will stay to hear what Governor Nixon has to say the next day. He also said the job opening for the city administrator position is on the MML website and two persons have already submitted resumes. The board approved Resolution #1-2014 that allows the mayor to execute a temporary employment agreement between the city and Ray Walden for the City Administrator position. They also approved Resolution #2-2014 that opposed the passage of laws by the General Assembly that would limit or eliminate local control to use city owned utility assets such as electric poles. The board then approved to repair a return activated sludge pump for the sewer department for a total cost of $4,455 rather than buy a new pump for $9,695 plus freight. It will take about 30 days to repair the pump and there is a one- year warranty on the repair. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred on Saturday, February 1^st at 11:39 in the morning on Highway 32. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 driven by Frank Schott of Salem was making a left turn onto Highway 32 from Missouri. The Ford was eastbound on highway 32 in the outer lane approaching Sligo and stated an unknown vehicle described as a white sedan car or small SUV was westbound in the eastbound outer lane. The Ford avoided contact by changing into the inner lane and lost control, spun around approximately 180 degrees across both east bound lanes, and made contact with the south curb before coming to a final rest position. The unknown white vehicles continued westbound on highway 32. No injuries were reported. The Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 sustained moderate damage. 

The Salem Community Garden will have a 2014 gardeners’ meeting on Saturday, February 8, 10:00 a.m. at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory (1200 W. Rolla Rd).  Anyone interested in having a garden plot this year should plan to attend the meeting.  Items on the agenda include the establishment of the 2014 rules and regulations, and a discussion on workshop topics for the season.  If you are interested in participating with the garden but are unable to attend the meeting, please contact Thom Haines at 247-7952 or Sarah Massengale at Dent County Extension 729-3196 to sign up. The Salem Community Garden provides garden plots for interested residents who need garden space or are new to gardening and want to learn from other gardeners.  Gardeners can grow food for their own families or to donate to service organizations such as the food pantry.  Workshops and events throughout the season provide gardeners with new gardening skills and techniques and share resources with other gardeners.

The Dent County Sheriff's Office has received calls about a possible scam that is making its way to Dent County residents. The "scammers" tell you that you have won a new car and they want you to agree to terms of a contract. Please do not agree to any terms of this phone call. The 2014 Forage and Beef Conference will be held on Monday, February 24^th at the Knights of Columbus located off I-44 the Highway UU exit in Cuba. Registration begins as 12:30. The Conference starts at 1:00 and dinner will be at 6:30 pm. There is a $10 per person charge for the conference-payable at the door.
