The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5170 and 6260, and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5600 also known as the Turtle Loop. He indicated that patch grading was going to be done in Jadwin and Montauk areas, and that brown rock would be hauled to the shed and screened. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be added and patch grading would be done to several roads in the district. He went on to report that workers would be cleaning leaves away from numerous road pipes that became clogged after the rains last week. Larson did say that the first reading of the petition to vacate Dent County Road 2230 would be held on Monday, February 11th during the regular course of business that morning. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting last week and they approved the appointment of Gary Larson to serve as an alternate. Skiles said Homeland Security Grants this year would need to be based upon the new THIRA guidelines and grant applications would be due on March 29th. He said a grant workshop would be held on February 20th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Truman Building in Jefferson City. Skiles said that the commissioners would be attending CCAM training this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and then Friday afternoon he would be attending a Central Region Workforce Investment Board Caucus. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she has prepared the Dent County Financial Statements for publication in the Salem News. She said that the courthouse would be closed on February 18th and that absentee voting for the Municipal Election would be start on February 19th. She also wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the April election would be March 6th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday, February 11th at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting will be open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. CPA Molly Malone of Verkamp and Malone, LLC was in attendance to go over the audit for the fiscal year ending June 30th, 2012. Malone said that it was a “clean” opinion for the city as she stated that the expenses and revenues were presented properly under generally accepted accounting principles. She indicated that the city had total assets as of June 30th of $14,717,000 with total liabilities of only $1,141,000. She said that the city had a positive cash flow, but showed a reduction in assets of $890,000 due to depreciation, which was $1,249,950 for the year. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that the City Youth Basketball Program needs 12 coaches, and they are looking for anyone who can help out. Lucas stated that there would be a Strategic Planning meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Upper Elementary school and that next Monday, February 11th at 6:15, there will be a meeting with Sullivan Publications for Ordinance Codification. Three aldermen did discuss storm water problems from the rains last week, and Alderman Giacomelli inquired about the demolition work on McArthur, but City Attorney William Camm Seay had not been in the office due to the death of his father. Mayor Gary Brown saluted Ezra Lewis on earning his Eagle Scout designation as only about 6% of all boy scouts achieve this level. To complete his Eagle Scout project, Lewis built target stands and shooting tables for the Dent County shooting range. Brown said that he, Lucas and City Clerk Mary Happel would be attending the MML Legislative Conference on Tuesday, February 12th. Brown reminded the aldermen of the Road Rally to be held on February 22nd and 23rd. During the month of January, 2,260 people used the Salem Fitness Center and another 1,458 attended the Salem TCRC. The board approved Bill #3267 to rezone 201 East Margaret from Residential R-3 to Commercial, and they approved the re-appointment of James Coffman to the Housing Authority Board for a four-year term. The board reviewed the financial statements of the Council for a Healthy Dent County as required by their lease. City Administrator Lucas discussed with the board the status of income received from the leasing of the facility and that he feels that the Council is in about the same financial position as they were the previous year. Attorney Seay said that the board has until April 1st to determine if the Council has become self-sufficient and can pay utilities and rent.

The 5th seeded Salem Lady Tiger basketball squad prevailed in a first round match-up against the 4th seeded Viburnum Lady Jays in the Newburg Tournament on Monday, 65-50. Savannah Hanning led Salem in scoring with 22 points and Kristin Hemken recorded a triple double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Salem moves to 9-11 on the season and will play top seed Licking on Thursday.

The Salem Tiger Boys basketball team will host the Cabool Bulldogs tonight in SCA play. JV will start off at 6:00 with the varsity to follow. Salem is 8-12 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. The 7th and 8th Grade Salem Lady Tiger Traveling Basketball Team won the Rolla 7th and 8th Grade Girls Basketball League with a perfect 6-0 record. On January 19th, the Salem Girls edged Cuba, 38-31, and then St. James, 38-29. On January 26th, the Lady Tigers beat the Hoopsters by the score of 49-23, before beating Plato by a score of 45-31. This past weekend, the Lady Tigers completed the league sweep by dominating Linn, 47-21, then overwhelmed Steelville by a score of 47-25. The Lady Tigers are comprised of Camryn Pryor, Payton Curley, Cheyenne Sercl, Kari Hatridge, Kaleigh Nash, Allie Fleener, Baylee Bilyeu and Shelby Carr. The team is coached by Brad Pryor.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Nashville Predators tonight at 7:00. The Blues are 6-2-0 on the year and KSMO Radio will broadcast the 3rd period following the Salem Tiger game.

Funeral services for Reba Lee Brand of Steelville, age 91, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Dillard Cemetery at Dillard.

Funeral services for Brenda Shaw of Salem, age 52, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.

Graveside services for Jennie Catherine Ortmann of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Jadwin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Salem Nutrition Site.

Funeral services for Goldie L. Giddens of Rolla, age 85, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 11:00 in the morning until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla.

Celebration of Life for William E. Seay of Salem, age 91, will be held Saturday, February 16th at 1:00 in the afternoon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library Building Fund.
