An accident happened Thursday evening at 6:50 on Interstate 44 about nine miles west of Rolla. According to the highway patrol, a 1997 Dodge Dakota driven eastbound by 51-year old Debra F. Trolinger of Salem, drove into the path of a 2009 Kenworth Tractor Trailer Unit that was heading eastbound driven by 56-year old Michael L. Dudley of Ashmore, Illinois. A passenger in the Dakota, 29-year old Angelique M. Bunton of Salem, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance. Everyone involved in the accident were wearing seat restraints. The Dodge Dakota was left at mile marker 177 after sustaining moderate damages. The Kenworth Tractor Trailer had only minor damage and was driven from the scene.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular meeting Tuesday night. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were discussed and approved. A discussion on the electric bill was held as the usage had tripled for the period of 12/13/2009 – 01/13/2010. Chief Nash had the City check the electric at the meter, which tested correctly. Nash also had Brown Heating and Cooling check furnaces and found that two of the heat pump furnaces had frozen in the locked position, causing them to run on the electric back up. This has been corrected and furnaces were serviced. Board member Liz Gruendel asked if a CPA should be hired for advice on investments and other financial situations, and Treasurer Dave Wells agreed that a double check would be a great idea. There were a total of 33 calls for the month. During the calendar review, Chief Nash noted that he would be attending a meeting to possibly apply for a block grant at MRPC, and he also noted that the Road Rally would be at the district building February 25^th through 27^th. Nash reported that the gear damaged in the American Auto fire has been sent for cleaning, it was determined by the cleaning company that the gear could not be cleaned and will have to be replaced. Insurance will pay for replacement, which will be $1,689.00 per set of gear. Seven sets of gear are to be replaced along with other firefighting equipment including a deck gun that exploded from the cold. Chief Nash asked the board to purchase a set of turnout gear for a new firefighter while the gear was being replaced. After discussion, a motion was made to go ahead and buy the gear for the new firefighter with an agreement for a 1-year commitment to the department from the firefighter. Chief Nash reported that ladder truck 81 has been repaired and is back in operation. The board then adjourned to go into closed session to discuss personnel. 

On Wednesday, February 10^th, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will have their monthly membership meeting. The meeting this month will take place at My Place Restaurant. The cost is $8.00 per person for those who wish to have lunch and please RSVP no later than Monday the 8^th of February. The guest speaker will be Alex Withrow, a counselor at Salem Senior High School, who will be speaking on how and when to begin preparing our youth for college. The meeting is open to everyone. There will be a Sweetheart Benefit Banquet in support of Show-Me-Hope on Friday, February 12^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium starting at 6:00. The dinner will be catered by Seasons-N-Thyme. Tickets are available at the Bank of Salem, Town and Country Bank and US Bank for $20 per person or two tickets for $35. Tickets MUST be purchased by noon on February 8^th.
