The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire call at 2:17 Saturday morning on Route W off of Highway 32 east. According to the report, the structure, owned by Judy Glidewell of Salem, was fully involved. Ten Dent County firefighters responded to the call and brought the fire under control at 6:54 in the morning. The structure was a total loss and the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s office was called in an attempt to determine the cause of the fire. The point of ignition was unknown. No one was injured in the fire.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After the call to order and roll call will be the hearing of persons in which, Richard Swank is requesting a streetlight be installed near 906 West Center Street. He states it is extremely dark near his house and cannot see his driveway of a night to turn in to. Also in the hearing of persons, Kenneth Nash wants to discuss with the Board the lack of the City getting an easement across his property, and annexation of his property into the city. Molly Malone of Verkamp & Malone will discuss with the board the 2005/2006 Audit Report. The consent agenda will consist of the approval of the minutes from the previous meetings along with the electric, street, water/sewer and animal control reports. At the last board meeting, the board postponed any decision concerning the serviceman’s pay scale and it will be addressed in unfinished business. In reports of city officials, boards and committees, Alderman Bill Riley would like to discuss the tree trimming program, and Alderman Jim McDaniels would like to discuss possible changes to the Tree Board Ordinance and the possibility of purchasing chairs for the Council Chambers. Aldermen Riley, McDaniels, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson will also discuss miscellaneous items involving the city and all will be followed by comments by Mayor Gary Brown. In new and miscellaneous business, Mayor Brown is recommending for the Planning and Zoning Board that Mike Thompson be appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mark Nash that will end 2010, and Dr. Wayne Bertz be appointed to fill the unexpired term of Leon Seneker that will end 2009. City Attorney Mark Weaver will present to the board petitions for annexation into the City. After the approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the City of Salem Board of Alderman may then go into closed session for the discussion of personnel, real estate and litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.               

State Senator Frank Barnitz, Democrat from Lake Spring, is pleased to announce he has received the 2007 Star of Agribusiness Award from the Missouri Agribusiness Association (MO-AG). Barnitz received the award at the MO-AG Winter Convention and Legislative Conference on January 11th. MO-AG is a leading advocate for an industry that employs some 400,000 Missourians. MO-AG has more than 375 members and is the foremost agribusiness trade association in the state. The agribusiness industry includes farmers, manufacturers, retailers, dealers, service providers and others, and it represents approximately 15 percent of the Missouri workforce. Barnitz feels the impact of agribusiness on our economy and standard of living cannot be overstated, and the people of the 16th District know that. Barnitz will continue his efforts to represent the interests of agribusiness in the Missouri Senate.

Senator Frank Barnitz announces that district legislative assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna will continue her listening post in February at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. A Listening Post in our area will be held on Tuesday, February 6th from 9:00 until 11:00 am at the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers overcame a poor second quarter with a strong second half and came back to beat the Thayer Bobcats Friday night, 64-48. Salem was led in scoring by Taylor Sirois with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Salem also had double figure scoring from Solomon McNeal, C.J. Smith and Cody Wofford who all tallied 11 points each. Salem moves to 3-0 in the SCA and 10-9 overall. Salem will host the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles tomorrow night starting at 6:00 with the JV game followed by the varsity contest at about 7:20.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers are the first seed in the Newburg Tournament and have drawn a bye for the first round. Their first game of the tournament will be Thursday against either Viburnum or Newburg.

Marcus Perry scored 15 points to lead the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a 66-61 victory over the Missouri Tigers in a Big 12 showdown from the Mizzou Arena. Keon Lawrence netted 18 points for Missouri (13-8, 2-6), while Darryl Butterfield chipped in 10 points and pulled down six boards in the loss. Nebraska shot 43.2% from the floor in the contest, while Missouri posted a dismal 37% shooting effort from the field.

Manny Legace made 22 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, as the St. Louis Blues beat the Dallas Stars, 2-0, at Scottrade Center. Martin Rucinsky and Keith Tkachuk scored the goals for the Blues, who ended a three-game slide. Doug Weight added a pair of assists for St. Louis, which has won five of eight. Marty Turco made 17 saves for the Stars, who had a two-game win streak halted and ended a four-game road trip 2-2. 

Peyton Manning finally has his championship. Manning threw for 247 yards and a touchdown, as the Colts rallied from the shock of an opening 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Devin Hester and an early eight-point deficit to beat the Chicago Bears, 29-17, in a turnover-laden Super Bowl XLI. The teams combined for eight turnovers, five from the Bears, including a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown from Indianapolis' Kelvin Hayden in the fourth quarter. Manning, who completed his ninth season in the NFL, was named the game's MVP and helped the Colts (16-4) to their first title since Super Bowl V, following the 1970 season, when the team was in Baltimore.

Funeral services for Bob Rinne of Licking, age 70, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Boone Creek Baptist Church with Dr. James Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for James “Jimmy” Lee Miskell of Salem, age 67 will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors.

Funeral services for Thelma Bernadean Holland of House Springs, age 81, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Corinth Cemetery.
