The City of Salem will hold a public hearing at 9:00 this morning concerning a property located at 817 East Gibbs, owned by Darin R & Tina Cook. The said property has been deemed a “Dangerous Building” under Section 6-28 of the Salem City Codes and the hearing will be held to allow the owner a chance to speak as to what his/her intention is to said building. The hearing will be held in the City Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington.
The Dent County Commission met Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said road crews would be out treating chip and seal roads, and taking care of slick spots on other county roads. Purcell also said workers would be making necessary repairs and doing maintenance on equipment to get it ready for the next storm system expected this week. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind the public the final day to comment on the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Draft Management Plan would be Friday. You can comment online at www.parkplanning.nps.gov or you can send a letter to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Attn: Superintendent, P.O. Box 490, Van Buren, MO 63965. If you have questions or need more information, call 573-323-4236. Skiles prepared a letter for the commission to send to the Superintendent regarding the draft plan and how the commission favored no action be taken and the reasons why. After reviewing the letter, all three commissioners approved sending the letter. He wanted to re-emphasize the importance of people checking the Centurylink phone bill to make sure they are paying Dent County taxes. He said if there is no listing as to what county you are paying your taxes to, then see if you are paying the 9-1-1 surcharge. If you are not paying the surcharge, you are not paying Dent County sales tax and your money is going to support a different county. You can call Centurylink at 1-800-786-6272 to make sure that your taxes are going to Dent County by correcting your bill. At the last meeting, the commissioners signed the 2014 Road Rally letter of support. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will pay bills; sign file copies as well as review and approve a 2014 budget for the district. There will be a calendar review as well as the monthly reimbursement report. The Board will then address any old or new business followed by reports. Before voting to go into closed session to discuss personnel, the Board will then set their March meeting for Tuesday, March 4th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. The meeting is open to the public.
Forest Service District Ranger, Thomas Haines, reports that permits are still available for the removal of timber from the Bunker Area Derecho Fuels Project. This project is not being done on a bid basis, instead the area was divided up into smaller lots and 24 permits have already been sold to date. Haines reports that about 50 permits remain and the cost of each permit will not exceed $300. Interested parties may buy permits for one lot at a time to ensure completion of the removal of the timber. The permit system is open to all interested residents and businesses, and he welcomes those interested in getting a permit to stop by the Forest Service office on Highway 19 or you can also call 729-6656. The end purpose of the project is to decrease the wildland fire risk to the community of Bunker and the surrounding areas by removing and reducing hazardous fuels. The final approval of any permits issued remains with the district ranger, Thom Haines.
Troop I of the Missouri Highway Patrol has released reports on a number of recent arrests. On Wednesday, January 29, 30 year-old Beverly A. Woods of Salem was arrested on a felony warrant from Dent County for probation violation and was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. Bradley J. Wickam of Salem, age 34, was arrested on Saturday, February 1, on a misdemeanor warrant from Dent County for driving while revoked, first offense. Wickam was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. That afternoon 30 year-old Lisa K. Inman of Salem was arrested on a Dent County misdemeanor warrant for no seat belt and was held in the Dent County Jail. That same afternoon Tiffany A. Birchard of Salem was arrested on two Dent County misdemeanor warrants for child restraint violations and held in the Dent County Jail. On Sunday, February 02, 45 year-old Emmett E. Lutman of Salem was arrested on a felony warrant from Dent County for probation violation. Lutman was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. Later that morning 29 year-old Sonya R. Watson of Salem was arrested on a Dent County warrant for failing to appear on a seat belt charge. Watson was placed in the Dent County Jail.
