The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, shoplifting and warrant. On Thursday, January 28^th at 9:30 pm, officers were detailed to the 1000 block of Highway 32 East in reference an assault of a female. The report led to the arrest of a 42-year old Bunker man on the assault. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. On Friday, January 29^th at 12:30 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting incident that led to the arrest of a 36-year old Salem man for stealing $4.93 of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. At 3:15 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched back to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting incident that led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem woman for stealing $58.93 of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Then at 3:30 the same afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting incident that led to the arrest of a 29-year old woman from Marion, Illinois for stealing $34.25 of merchandise. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Monday, February 1^st at 2:20 in the afternoon, an officer contacted a 17-year old Salem man at Salem Police Department in reference to a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear on a traffic citation. He was arrested on the warrant, paid the fine and cost and was released.

James L. Kelley, Sr., of Salem was sentenced to 18 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm, United States Attorney Richard G. Callahan announced. The 52-year old Kelley pleaded guilty in November 2009 to one felony count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Due to his previous criminal history, law to own or possess firearms forbids him. He appeared Tuesday for sentencing before United States District Judge Carol E. Jackson. The case was investigated and prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which seeks to prevent violent crime through enforcement of federal firearms laws, such as the law prohibiting convicted felons from possessing firearms. Callahan commended the work on the case by the Salem Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and Assistant United States Attorney Cristian M. Stevens, who handled the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The Missouri State Treasurer’s office is required by law to collect and maintain property and funds that are unclaimed by Missourians. Financial institutions, businesses, government agencies and other organizations turn in these items. The state holds more than $550 million dollars in unclaimed assets and some of this could belong to you. One in every 10 Missourians has assets being held by the Unclaimed Property Division. After five years, property is turned over to the treasurer’s office where it is held until the rightful owners come forward. Tangible property held by the state is periodically sold to maintain storage room, through the proceeds from the sale of the items is made available for claiming. When writing include a list of possible owner names, addresses and previous addresses. You’ll receive a response to your claim within 90 days. The fastest and most efficient way to check to see if you have unclaimed property is to visit the website www.treasurer.mo.gov and click on the Unclaimed Property link.

On Wednesday, February 10^th, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will have their monthly membership meeting. The meeting this month will take place at My Place Restaurant. The cost is $8.00 per person for those who wish to have lunch and please RSVP no later than Monday the 8^th of February. The guest speaker will be Alex Withrow, a counselor at Salem Senior High School, who will be speaking on how and when to begin preparing our youth for college. The meeting is open to everyone. There will be a Sweetheart Benefit Banquet in support of Show-Me-Hope on Friday, February 12^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium starting at 6:00. The dinner will be catered by Seasons-N-Thyme. Tickets are available at the Bank of Salem, Town and Country Bank and US Bank for $20 per person or two tickets for $35. Tickets MUST be purchased by noon on February 8^th.
