The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, the Board will hear from the Relay for Life Co-Chairperson Carilee Ball, requesting permission to use the City Park for the Annual Relay for Life event to be held June 13
th. During bids, The City of Salem requested bids for a new sign at the Old City Hall and the Mayor Brown will present the bids in which, $2,500 was budgeted for this item in this year’s budget. After the approval of the agenda, Alderman Jim McDaniels, Bill Riley, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem and Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments. After the approval bills, the Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Basketball Homecoming Friday night was postponed and will be held on February 12th.
Governor Matt Blunt and the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) announced that the race is on for the best older worker of 2008. Now it it’s 18th year, Missouri’s annual Older Worker of the Year contest seeks to crown a Missouri resident who is 55 years of age or older, employed at a Missouri job at least 20 hours a week, and displays dependability, loyalty, new skills and self-motivation on the job. The winner and regional finalists will be recognized at a two-day ceremony with dignitaries in Jefferson City in April or May. Nomination forms for 2008’s Older Worker of the Year are available on the Department of Health and Senior Services website www.dhss.mo.gov. Completed nomination forms must also include a narrative as to why the nominee should be selected, must be postmarked, faxed or e-mailed by March 14th. Missouri landowners interested in participating in the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) should apply by February 22nd to be eligible for the next round of funding, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced. WRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to restore, enhance, and protect wetlands on their properties. NRCS provides technical and financial support to help landowners with their wetland restoration efforts. By signing WRP easements, landowners receive cash payments in exchange for restoring or converting marginal agricultural land to shallow wetland areas. They also agree to maintain the areas protected by the WRP easements. NRCS' goal is to achieve the greatest wetland functions and values, along with optimum wildlife habitat, on every acre enrolled in the program. WRP easement offers will represent the property's appraised value, the easement rate cap for that region, or the landowner's offer, whichever is lowest. Missouri NRCS has increased WRP easement rate caps and updated its ranking form. Contact the USDA office in Rolla, located at 1050 East Highway 72 or by calling (573) 364-2088 for more information.
The University of Missouri Extension will conduct a three-session workshop titled “Equine Business Management Series” targeted to horse owners and enthusiasts who want to make the most of their financial investment. The first session will include, record keeping, why to keep records, and what type of records work best for you. The second session will discuss income taxes as they pertain to the equine business and the third session will cover the business plan, why you need a business plan and how to put one together. The presenters for this series will be Extension specialists James Thompson, Agriculture Business and Mick Gilliam, Business and Industry. The series will be held on Thursday, February 14th, 21st and 28th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Salem TCRC located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 West Rolla Road. The Thayer Bobcats dominated the second half Friday night as they outscored Salem, 44-16 in the final 16 minutes en route to 76 to 39 thrashing of the Tigers. Taylor Sirois led Salem with 12 points and Cody Wofford added 11 for Salem who fall to 15-6 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. Salem will be at Mountain View Tuesday night to face the Liberty Eagles in another SCA clash.
The Salem Lady Tigers are seeded 2nd in the Newburg Tournament and will face the Licking Lady Wildcats tonight at 7:00. The next round of games will be held on Thursday night. Salem will face the winner or loser of the Dixon and Newburg contest in the second round. Salem is 14-5 on the year.
The Lady Tigers will also be at Mountain Grove on Tuesday night to make up last Thursday’s snowed out game. Salem is 3-1 in the SCA.
T.J. Hensick and Ben Guite each notched a pair of goals as the Colorado Avalanche picked up a wild 6-4 road win over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center. Paul Kariya, Andy McDonald, Dan Hinote and Keith Tkachuk all scored goals for the Blues, who had their two-game winning streak snapped and who have lost eight of their last 10 outings. The Blues will host Tampa Bay tomorrow night at 7:30.
J.T. Tiller tallied a career-high 20 points, leading the Missouri Tigers to a 77-74 upset of 22nd-ranked Kansas State in a Big 12 matchup that went down to the wire. Leo Lyons returned to the lineup and notched 13 points off the bench for the Tigers (13-9, 3-4 Big 12), who have won two of their last three and will get another chance at a ranked team tonight with a visit to Kansas. Keon Lawrence added 11 points in the winning effort Saturday, helping Mizzou improve to 11-2 as the host. Game time tonight is at 7:30 and you can hear the contest on KSMO.
Eli Manning's 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter boosted the New York Giants to one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history, a 17-14 victory over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots. New York (14-6) came into Super Bowl XLII as 12-point underdogs, but still managed to win the title for the first time since the 1990 season, all while preventing perfection by the Patriots (18-1).
