The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 15
th. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m. The categories for volunteer recognition are: Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Historic Preservation, Humanitarianism and Youth (an adult or adult organization or a youth or youth organization.) Individuals that have been nominated include: Bryon Craig, Ken Fiebelman, Joan Gray, Larry Gray, Jim Heavin, Mike Helm, Rusty & Dolly Howard, Pat Johnson, Vicki Loveday, Glinn Lovins, David Nichols, Bob Parsons, Scott Radford, Berniece Robinson, Jackie Sisco & Val Davidson, Mary Lou Smith and Charlotte White. Organizations that were nominated will include: the Current River Scrappers Quilt Guild, the Dent County Historical Society, Dollar General Employees, the Lifeway Center Inc, the National Honor Society, the Salem Masonic Lodge #225 and the Salem Memorial District Hospital Employees. The Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members until Thursday, February 10
th.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service is extending the deadline for students to apply for student employment programs including Student Career Experience Program and Student Temporary Employment Program. Qualifications for students selected for any program include: students must be at least 16 years of age; be a U.S. Citizen; have a good academic standing in school; and be enrolled or accepted as a student taking at least a part-time academic, vocational or technical course load in pursuit of a diploma, certificate, or degree. The Student Career Experience Program provides work experience directly related to the student's academic program or career goals. Student Career Experience Program students selected may be non-competitively converted to career, term, or career-conditional appointments after completing 640 hours in the program prior to graduation. The Student Temporary Employment Program provides an opportunity for students to earn money, continue their education, train with professionals, and combine academic study with on-the-job experience. Work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals. Students may work part time when school is in session and full time during vacation periods. The one-year Student Temporary Employment Program can be renewed at the supervisor's discretion. The new application deadline is March 1, 2011, and applications are available at www.fs.fed.us/r9/employment
Missouri Show-Me Quality Assurance is mandatory for all 4-H/FFA livestock members planning to exhibit any animal at the 2011 fair. This includes small animal projects. Livestock members must attend one of the two Dent County Quality Assurance meetings. The mandatory livestock quality assurance meetings in Salem will be on February 17th and the 22nd starting at 7:00 each evening at The Commons. There will be no make-up dates, unless bad weather cancels. If a livestock member cannot attend either of these two meetings, the 4-H/FFA members must contact the Extension office for dates of meetings available in other counties.
MoDOT wants to help farmers operate safely on highways and to avoid penalties for violations. That's why experts from the department's motor carrier services division will be offering a free agricultural transportation seminar. Every year, many farmers and producers are surprised to find that they are subject to federal and state safety and economic registration transportation laws. The classes will be held on Monday, February 7th at the Old City Hall Auditorium, located at 202 North Washington Street in Salem from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For reservations, please contact MoDOT Motor Carrier Services toll free at 1-866-831-6277 extension #6. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers makeup game with Potosi scheduled for tonight and has been postponed and has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 12th at 2:00. The Boys are scheduled to play Cabool tomorrow night at the SHS gym and it will be Homecoming. The JV game would start at 6:00 followed by the varsity game with the Homecoming festivities held between the games.
The Salem Lady Basketball game with the Thayer Lady Bobcats tonight has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play Willow Springs Lady Bears at Willow Springs Saturday afternoon at 3:00 in the makeup game from Monday night.
Keiton Page and Jean-Paul Olukemi both finished with 19 points, and Oklahoma State topped No. 14 Missouri, 76-70, at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Marcus Denmon and Matt Pressey both scored 15 points to pace the Tigers (17-5, 3-4), who have dropped back-to-back games. Ricardo Ratliffe added 13 points while Laurence Bowers and Justin Safford both scored seven in the loss. The Tigers are winless on the road in conference play (0-4). Missouri will be back home Saturday to host Colorado starting at 6:00.
The St. Louis Blues activated center Andy McDonald from injured reserve on Wednesday. The 33-year-old missed the last 24 contests after suffering a concussion during a December 4 overtime loss to Edmonton. McDonald has posted eight goals and 17 points in 25 games this season. To open a roster spot, the club assigned forward Philip McRae to Peoria of the American Hockey League.
The St. Louis Blues announced Wednesday that the postponed game between the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at Scottrade Center. Tickets dated for Tuesday, Feb. 1 will be valid for the new date.

Funeral services for Iva “Dee’ Terry of Salem, age 96, will be held Friday at 11:00 James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for Gene Mitchell Stires Sr. of Salem, age 53, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.
Funeral services for Helen Loraine (Wooliver) Fruekes, of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Stone Hill Church in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Kutis South County Chapel in St. Louis. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.
A funeral mass for David Lee Poncet of Hazelwood, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:45 Saturday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Cemetery with full military honors.
Funeral services for Angel V. Cuevas of Salem, age 65, will be held Sunday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be private at a later date.
