An accident occurred at 5:20 Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Highway 63 about 12 miles south of Rolla that took the life of a woman from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Chevrolet HHR driven by 55-year old Karen Chambers of Licking was traveling northbound on Highway 63. Chambers lost control of the HHR on snow and ice covered roadway, crossed the centerline. A 2010 Highway Patrol Ford Crown Victoria driven southbound by 43-year old George Arnold of Rolla was unable to avoid the HHR and was struck head-on by the HHR. The Ford then traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. The HHR crossed back over the centerline and came to rest in the roadway. Arnold suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Chambers was also taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman’s Towing. 

An accident occurred on Thursday, January 20th at 11:42 pm on Highway 32 at Water Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2000 Ford F-150 driven by Mitchell Kissir of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32, as a pedestrian was traveling across the road. Kissir did not see the pedestrian until the last second and tried to swerve and apply the brake but was unable to avoid the pedestrian. The Ford collided with the pedestrian. The pedestrian suffered moderate injuries and was transported by air ambulance to the hospital. The Ford sustained minor damage.

Corporal Allen Kimrey of the Salem Police Department said that the DARE graduation for Salem Upper Elementary fifth graders scheduled for this Thursday at 6:00 has been postponed due to weather. The event will be rescheduled at a later date.

Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded four traffic fatalities during the month of December 2010. This is four more than December 2009.  The total number of fatalities for 2010 was 30 compared to 27 for the same time period for 2009. There were 192 accidents with 67 injuries and no fatalities for December 2009 compared to 258 accidents with 94 injuries and four fatalities for December 2010. Crawford County reported 28 accidents with 12 injuries and one fatality, Dent County reported 23 accidents with nine injuries and Laclede County reported 57 accidents with 23 injuries and two fatalities. Also reporting for December 2010 was Maries County with 16 accidents, 10 injuries and one fatality, Phelps County with 84 accidents and 15 injuries while Pulaski County had 50 accidents with 25 injuries.

MoDOT wants to help farmers operate safely on highways and to avoid penalties for violations. That's why experts from the department's motor carrier services division will be offering a free agricultural transportation seminar. Every year, many farmers and producers are surprised to find that they are subject to federal and state safety and economic registration transportation laws. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers game with Houston was postponed Tuesday and was rescheduled for Thursday, February 10th at the SHS Gym. The Boys game with Potosi that was rescheduled for this Thursday has been postponed again and rescheduled for Saturday, February 12th at 2:00. The makeup game with Sullivan that was postponed three weeks ago will not be made up.

The Salem Lady Tigers basketball game with Willow Springs that was to be held Monday night has been rescheduled for this Saturday at 3:00 at Willow Springs.

The St. Louis Blues game with the Colorado Avalanche scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed and it will be rescheduled at a later date. This is the first time in the history of the Blues that a game was postponed due to weather. They will host Edmonton Friday night at 7:00.

The Missouri Tigers are scheduled to be at Oklahoma State tonight at 7:30. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) will hold tournaments for its St. Louis, Southwest, Central and Kansas City regions during late January through mid February followed by the 2011 state tournament February 25th through 26th. MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in partnership with schools and supporting organizations throughout the state. MoNASP is an affiliate of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and promotes education, self-esteem and physical activity for students in grades 4-12 through participation in the sport of archery.  More than 25,000 Missouri students from 148 schools participate in MoNASP. The Southwest Regional Tournament will be held Saturday, February 5th at the Willard Middle School, 205 Miller Road in Willard. The Southwest Region Counties include: Barton, Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barry, Lawrence, Dade, Cedar, Hickory, Polk, Greene, Christian, Stone, Taney, Webster, Dallas, Laclede, Pulaski, Phelps, Dent, Texas, Wright, Douglas, Ozark, Howell, Shannon, Oregon, Carter and Ripley. Funeral services for Iva “Dee’ Terry of Salem, age 96, will be held Friday at 11:00 James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Gene Mitchell Stires Sr. of Salem, age 53, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Helen Loraine (Wooliver) Fruekes, of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Stone Hill Church in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Kutis South County Chapel in St. Louis. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.

A funeral mass for David Lee Poncet of Hazelwood, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:45 Saturday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Angel V. Cuevas of Salem, age 65, will be held Sunday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be private at a later date.
