The Salem Lady Tigers used a tight defense and took advantage of some early turnovers to jump on the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers early, then cruise to a 54-19 win last night at the Salem High School Gym. Salem was led in scoring by Kirsten Stephens with 21 points followed by Allison Jones with 14 and Natalie Howard with 13. Jones also pulled down 12 rebounds for Salem who are now 16-4 on the year and 5-0 in the SCA.
The Lady Tigers are seeded first in the Newburg Tournament and will draw a bye in the first round and will not play again until Thursday at 6:30 against the winner of the Newburg/Viburnum game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will travel to Thayer to face the Bobcats tonight at 6:00 with the JV game starting things off with the varsity contest to follow at about 7:20. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO. Salem enters the game with a 9-9 record and they are 2-0 in the SCA.
The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings at 6:30. KSMO will air the first period, then break away for Salem Basketball, then air the third period on a taped delayed basis. The Blues on Saturday will be home to face Dallas at 7:00 and you can hear that game live on KSMO. The Blues are ten points out of a playoff spot, but have lost their last two games after coming to within one game of the .500 mark.
The Missouri Tigers will face Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Arena starting at 12:15. Missouri enters the game with a 13-7 record and 2-5 in the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Former St. Louis Cardinal and current San Francisco Giants catcher Mike Matheny, a four-time Gold Glove winner, announced his retirement on Thursday. Matheny, age 36, had one-year remaining on the three-year contract he signed with San Francisco before the 2005 season, but he was forced to cut his career short due to post-concussion syndrome. Matheny had taken a number of foul tips off his helmet in his career, resulting in a series of concussions. Matheny made his mark behind the plate as a defensive specialist capturing three Gold Gloves with the Cardinals (2000, 2003 and 2004) before taking home the award most recently with San Francisco in 2005.
