The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that District 1 and 2 crews are spreading sand and salt on bridges, hills, and approaches to make traveling conditions easier. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

More than 1,000 youth and adults will convene at the University of Missouri’s Trowbridge Livestock Center in Columbia on March 10 for the 18th annual Missouri Youth Livestock Grading and Judging Contest and Workshop. This contest, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA), the University of Missouri and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is designed to improve the state’s livestock industry by teaching both youth and adults how to evaluate livestock using USDA grade standards. The Missouri Youth Livestock Grading and Judging Contest shows participants how to apply federal grades on feeder and slaughter cattle. This year’s contest will again demonstrate slaughter goat grades. Keep/cull classes, where contestants learn how to make production decisions, will also be a part of the day’s activities. Traditional cattle, hog and sheep judging will complete the competition, with 60 trophies and plaques to be awarded in each division. A grading and judging workshop will be offered to youth in grades eight and lower. The workshop is limited to the first 275 registrants and will teach participants how to apply USDA grades, keep/cull criteria and traditional judging. Contestant’s ages 21 and older will have the opportunity to qualify as certified livestock judges. Those who score at least 80 percent in the adult competition may have their names included on a list of certified livestock judges. The list is distributed statewide for a variety of activities, including county fairs, competitions and educational and leadership events. The popular Equine Clinic will return this year with the assistance of the Missouri Equine Council. This workshop will be held at a separate location. Registration for the livestock contest or workshop is $6 per person including lunch; the Equine Clinic is $10 and also includes lunch. The deadline to register is February 9, 2007. The Salem Lady Tigers used a tight defense and took advantage of some early turnovers to jump on the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers early, then cruise to a 54-19 win last night at the Salem High School Gym. Salem was led in scoring by Kirsten Stephens with 21 points followed by Allison Jones with 14 and Natalie Howard with 13. Jones also pulled down 12 rebounds for Salem who are now 16-4 on the year and 5-0 in the SCA.

The Lady Tigers are seeded first in the Newburg Tournament and will draw a bye in the first round and will not play again until Thursday at 6:30 against the winner of the Newburg/Viburnum game.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will travel to Thayer to face the Bobcats tonight at 6:00 with the JV game starting things off with the varsity contest to follow at about 7:20. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO. Salem enters the game with a 9-9 record and they are 2-0 in the SCA.

The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings at 6:30. KSMO will air the first period, then break away for Salem Basketball, then air the third period on a taped delayed basis. The Blues on Saturday will be home to face Dallas at 7:00 and you can hear that game live on KSMO. The Blues are ten points out of a playoff spot, but have lost their last two games after coming to within one game of the .500 mark.

The Missouri Tigers will face Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Arena starting at 12:15. Missouri enters the game with a 13-7 record and 2-5 in the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Former St. Louis Cardinal and current San Francisco Giants catcher Mike Matheny, a four-time Gold Glove winner, announced his retirement on Thursday. Matheny, age 36, had one-year remaining on the three-year contract he signed with San Francisco before the 2005 season, but he was forced to cut his career short due to post-concussion syndrome. Matheny had taken a number of foul tips off his helmet in his career, resulting in a series of concussions. Matheny made his mark behind the plate as a defensive specialist capturing three Gold Gloves with the Cardinals (2000, 2003 and 2004) before taking home the award most recently with San Francisco in 2005.

Funeral services for Bobby Smith Sr. of Salem, age 76, will be held today at 10:00 at the Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Prospect Cemetery in Lonedell. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral services for Jerry Gale Light Jr. of Salem, age 38, will be held on today at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the House of Prayer Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Jerry Gale Light Jr.

Funeral services for Lloyd Roberts of Salem, age 83 will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Gerald “Jerry” Loughridge of Salem, age 64, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

A memorial service for Carol Lee McMullin of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will be at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

A memorial service for Gary “Heath” McNelly of Vichy, age 31, will be held Saturday at 5:00 at the Rolla Moose Lodge. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until service time. Memorials are suggested to the Gary Heath McNelly Memorial Fund at the Citizens Bank of Newburg. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Ed Dudley or Salem, age 74, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic service at 5:30. Interment will be in the North Lawn Mausoleum. Memorials are suggested to the Rose Holland Trout Derby or the American Heart Association.
