The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5420 and 5610. He also said that the workers are preparing the equipment for the impeding snow and ice storm in the area. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2020 and 4260, and other county workers are trying to repair the starter on Dent County Truck #114. He also said that the workers were preparing the equipment and trucks for the expected storm. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the commissioners were preparing for their annual training to be held Wednesday through Friday in Jefferson City, but that training has been postponed due to the weather. Since there is no training to attend, the Commissioners plan to meet this Thursday. He said an Emergency Management meeting was held at the Dent County Fire Protection District Firehouse in the Emergency Operations room Monday afternoon. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley handed out some reports from other county clerks concerning Missouri Senate bills on early or advanced voting, and also on the having a photo ID to vote. These comments included the statements made by senators that they would require local governments to fund the program instead of the state picking up the costs. She also said that court on Tuesday had been cancelled due to the weather, but the other offices at the Judicial Building will be open. Phone bids were also taken for propane for the courthouse and the low bid went to Ferrelgas for $1.829 per gallon for the 1,000-gallon tank. The next scheduled meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday, February 3rd at 9:00 in the morning at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

With adverse weather conditions expected, people are being asked to remove their vehicles from all streets within the city designated as emergency “snow routes.” These streets shall have priority over other streets for the clearing of snow, ice or other debris. They include Third Street west from Highway 19 to Dilworth Lane, and Third Street east from Pershing Avenue to Iron Mountain Road; Fourth Street from Pershing Avenue to McArthur Avenue; Sixth Street (Rolla Road) from McArthur Avenue to Pershing Avenue; Jackson Street north from Sixth Street (Rolla Road) to the dead end; Tenth Street from Highway 19 to Walnut Hill Drive; Pershing Avenue from Tenth Street to Highway 32/72; Center Street from Highway 19 to Craig Industrial Drive; Carty Street from Highway 32/72 to Center Street; Craig Industrial Drive from Highway 32/72 to Iron Mountain Road; Babb Lane from Highway 32/72 to Roosevelt Street; Doss Road south from Highway 32/72 to the city limits; Roosevelt Street east from Highway 19 to Babb Lane and west from Highway 19 to Wines Street; Wines Street from Roosevelt Street to Highway 32/72; Missouri Avenue from Highway 32/72 to Third Street; Park Street from Highway 32/72 to Sixth Street (Rolla Road); Franklin Street west from McArthur Avenue to Highway 72 and east from Highway 19 to Pershing Avenue; Dilworth Lane from Route J to Highway 32 West; and Center Street west from Missouri Avenue to Dilworth Lane. Remember to remove your vehicle from these routes when an accumulation of ice and snow is expected so that the route can be cleared or it could be towed at your expense, or you could be sited for a parking violation.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their report involving arrests made in Dent County this past week. On Thursday, January 27th at 7:13 in the evening, 35-year old Jerry Chafton of Salem was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for frauding secured creditors for $500 or more. He was taken to the Dent County jail. On Saturday, January 29th at 4:33 in the afternoon, 37-year old Leonard Garrett of Jadwin was arrested on a St. Charles County warrant for insufficient funds and no seat belt. He was taken to the Dent County jail. Later that evening at 9:05 p.m., 24-year old Ross Obernuefemann of Columbia was arrested and charged with possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana and speeding. He was taken to the Dent County jail and released.

The Salem Girls Basketball game with Willow Springs Monday night was postponed due to the weather and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host Houston tonight, weather permitting, starting with the JV game at 6:00 followed by the varsity contest. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and also online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 5-12 record and 0-1 in the SCA.

In the McDonald’s Panther Classic, Jacob Kettner was named to the All-Tournament Team and Jonathan Hambacker was named the tournament MVP. Congratulations Tigers!!

According to Salem Basketball Coach, Nic Zenker, the Salem basketball Tigers took first place in the McDonald’s Panther Classic Tournament in the tie-breakers over Mountain Grove and Willow Springs.

The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight as they will host the Colorado Avalanche starting at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

The Basketball Homecoming will be held on Friday, February 4th between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games, as the Salem Tigers will take on the Cabool Bulldogs. The Sophomore attendant is Paige Arnett; the Junior attendant will be Crystal Prince; and the Senior Queen Candidates are Amy Huitt, Sam Riley and Kala Trolinger.

Funeral services for Gene Mitchell Stires Sr. of Salem, age 53, will be held at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses. THIS SERVICE HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Funeral services for Helen Loraine (Wooliver) Fruekes, of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Stone Hill Church in Salem. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Kutis South County Chapel in St. Louis. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.

A funeral mass for David Lee Poncet of Hazelwood, age 71, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:45 Saturday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Angel V. Cuevas of Salem, age 65, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Iva “Dee’ Terry of Salem, age 96, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
