Missouri residents in the 8th Congressional District are to be on the lookout for scam artists offering to help citizens obtain tax refunds or rebates by e-mail. The message, which uses Internal Revenue Service (IRS) logos and looks legitimate, directs recipients to a website where they are asked for their Social Security and bank account or ATM numbers. The IRS would never ask for this information by e-mail. IF the IRS needs to notify you of a refund, they will never do so by telephone or e-mail. This scam, according to the IRS, purports to deposit a refund in a bank account or credit it to a charge card, but the criminals actually do the opposite by making withdrawals or charging purchases. Identity theft is a very serious problem that can cause financial damage and ruin your credit. These people often prey on people who are unfamiliar with the Internet or e-mail. Suspicious e-mail can be reported to the IRS by forwarding it to phishing@irs.gov, where the IRS will investigate it.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers game with Mountain Grove tonight has been postponed and will be played on Tuesday, February 5th at Mountain Grove.

Aleks Maric scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the Missouri Tigers, 66-62, in Big 12 Conference action at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers (12-9, 2-4), who had just eight players available for the night, were paced by DeMarre Carroll with 15 points and 12 rebounds, J.T. Tiller 14 points and eight boards, while Vaidotas Volkus and Matt Lawrence contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Missouri head coach Mike Anderson was forced to suspend several players indefinitely on Tuesday for a violation of team rules. Sitting out the game tonight were Jason Horton, Marshall Brown, Darryl Butterfield and Leo Lyons, plus Stefhon Hannah is out with a broken jaw.

The Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration with utility player Esteban German by agreeing to a one-year contract. In 121 games last season, German batted .264 with four home runs and 37 RBI while playing at third base, second base, shortstop and the outfield for Kansas City. The signing leaves outfielder Mark Teahen and pitcher Zack Greinke as the remaining arbitration-eligible players for the Royals.

The St. Louis Rams hired Al Saunders to be their new offensive coordinator Wednesday. Saunders signed a three-year deal to replace the departed Greg Olson, who took the quarterbacks coach job in Tampa Bay after being reassigned by the Rams. Saunders was dismissed by the Washington Redskins on Saturday after two seasons as that team's associate head coach/offense. This will be Saunders' second stint in the Gateway City. He spent 1999 and 2000 in St. Louis as the recievers coach under both Dick Vermeil and Mike Martz.
