The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2400, 5400, 5440 and 6470 while materials would be hauled to county roads 5450, 6170 and 6190. Purcell said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5580 and crews would be patching potholes in a number of locations. He did note that Dent County Road 6180 has a permanent bad spot and crews will be making a permanent repair once the weather allows. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that crews would be grading Dent County Roads 2090, 3190, 3260 and 5300 while brush would be cut on county road 2110. Larson stated materials would be hauled to Dent County Roads 5280 and 5320, work crews would be patching the chip and seal on county road 6150 and one man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the MRPC Day at the Capital on Tuesday where he met with various senators and representatives that represent the Meramec region to discuss a number of issues. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported the Workman’s Comp insurance representative performed their annual audit on payroll earnings, 941’s as well as 1099’s and the county received an excellent rating. Treasurer Denita Williams brought in warrants for the transfers that were approved in the budget. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public. 

The Phelps County Public Housing Agency continues to take applications to help area families pay rent. The PHA will accept applications two days in February at its St. James office. Applications will be accepted at the St. James office from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Wednesday, February 4th and February 18th. The St. James office is located at Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. Persons may visit www.meramecregion.org and click on the Phelps County Housing Agency link to print anapplication, fill it out, and bring it with them to either PHA location. All adults must sign the application prior to submitting. The Phelps County PHA is an Equal Opportunity Housing Agency that offers rental assistance to very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Washington counties, and Phelps County, outside the city of Rolla. Former Riverways Chief Ranger Larry Johnson has been selected to serve as the Acting Superintendent at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, following the retirement of Bill Black on January 3. Johnson returned to the Riverways on January 16 and will serve as the Acting Superintendent for up to 120 days, while a new permanent superintendent is sought. Johnson is a 32-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS) and has served as the Superintendent of Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota since July, 2010. He recently completed a 14-month detail to the Badlands National Park as the Deputy Superintendent, managing park operations while the park worked on establishment of the first Tribal National Park with the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Johnson completed the “Leadership in the 21st Century” Executive Education program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. A graduate of the NPS New Superintendent Academy and the National Parks Institute, Larry has a B.S. in Outdoor Recreation Resource Management from Iowa State University and has been married for 33 years to his wife Jan, an artist and writer. The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers could not overcome the Hartville Eagle full court press turning the ball over 21 times and dropping a 71-48 decision. Logan Woolf led the Salem Tigers with 17 points with Kobe Mead adding 12 more. The Tigers fall to 9-8 on the year and they will play in the 3rd place game Saturday night against Marshfield at 6:00 at Mountain Grove in the Family Pharmacy Tournament.

Four Salem Lady Tigers were in double figures as the Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Cardinals of Steelville Thursday night, 80-50. Payton Curley led the Lady Tigers with 22 followed by Kari Hatridge with 21, Savannah Hanning with 15 and Baylee Bilyeu added 12 more. Salem is now 13-4 on the year and they will host Houston on Monday night.

The 2015 City of Salem Youth Winter Basketball sign-ups for all boys and girls in 1st thru 6th grade and will take place today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and on Saturday, January 31st from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon). All signups will be held in the front lobby at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. The cost is $20 per child. Kevin Shattenkirk scored in the 4th round of the shootout to give the Blues a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators Thursday night. Jaden Schwartz, T.J. Oshie, Steve Ott and Ryan Reaves all tallied goals for the Blues in their third straight win. The Blues will be in Carolina tonight to face the Hurricane starting at 5:30 on KSMO Radio. (Blues won 3-2 in shootout. The Blues also beat the Washington Capitals on Sunday, 4-3.)

Andrew Harrison scored 15 points and No. 1 Kentucky stayed unbeaten with a relatively restrained 69-53 win over Missouri on Thursday. Wes Clark led the Tigers with 19 points, while Johnathan Williams III added 10 points in a losing cause. Missouri, now 7-13 overall and 1-6 in the SEC, will play Ole Miss Saturday at 2:30 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral Mass for Carol Timson of Salem, age 87, was held Friday morning at 10:30 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and/or Food for the Poor. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Isaiah “Little Bear” Hyde of Rolla, age 25, was held Fridayat 4:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time on today. Interment will be in the Two Moons Family Cemetery in Montana.

A memorial service for Larry Ray Treat of Rolla, age 73, was held this Saturday morning at 10:30 at Salem Full Gospel Church on Highway 19 North in Salem with Brother Gary Chilton officiating.

Funeral Mass for John W. Bell, of Salem, age 81, was held Saturday at 2:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Bourbon Cemetery in Bourbon. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Marie Lewis, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Rector Cemetery in Shannon County. Memorials are suggested to the Rector Cemetery.

Funeral services for Martha Toole of Vienna, age 82, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Warrenton Cemetery, Warrenton, Missouri.

Funeral service for Jim Gorman of Licking, age 65, will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Fox Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM, at the Fox Funeral Home. All arrangements under direction of Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Athalee Ada Summers of St. James, age 88, will be held Saturday at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the St. James Animal Shelter or the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
