The Dent County Commission held their quarterly night meeting Tuesday evening in the courtroom at the Judicial Building with office holders and media in attendance. At the start of the budget hearing, Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to thank all office holders for Dent County for coming in below budget for the year 2013. Skiles then reported on the five major categories for the budget hearing for the 2014 budget. The General Revenue Fund showed a beginning balance of $1,299,904.64 for January 1, 2013. Revenues for 2013 totaled $1,353,136.33 and expenses came in at $1,324,880.17 thus leaving an ending balance as of December 31, 2013 of $1,328,160.80. The estimated revenues for 2014 are $1,364,339.29 and with estimated expenses of $1,745,470.24, the estimated ending balance for the General Revenue Fund for 2014 is $947,029.85. Revenues came in at $1,278,438.78 and expenses totaled $1,274,246.92, which left an ending balance as of December 31, 2013 of $126,101.64. Estimated revenues for 2014 are $1,536,500.00 and expenses are estimated at $1,600,756.00. The estimated ending balance for Road and Bridge for 2014 is $61,845.64. The Assessment Fund showed a beginning balance of $77,672.67 as of January 1, 2013. Revenues for 2013 totaled $170,796.65 and expenses came in at $181,202.73. The ending balance for the Assessment Fund as of December 31, 2013 was $67,266.59. The estimated revenues for 2014 are $177,013.00 and estimated expenses are $194,358.00, which would leave an ending balance of $49,921.59 for 2014. In the 9-1-1 Fund the beginning balance on January 1, 2013 was $100,947.74. Revenues came in at $37,556.71 with expenses totaling $50,119.15, leaving an ending balance of $88,385.30 as of December 31, 2013. For 2014, revenues are estimated to be $37,500.00 and expenses are estimated to be $49,665.78 bringing the estimated ending balance for December 31, 2014 at $76,219.52. The LEST (Law Enforcement Sales Tax) Fund showed a beginning balance of $121,272.10 on January 1, 2013. After the budget was presented, District 1Commissioner Dennis Purcell made a motion to accept the budget, but with a change to the Road and Bridge Department budget. Purcell noted that chip and seal roads were not done last year and he and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson felt that chip and seal roads needed to be maintained this year. Although no new chip and seal roads may be added, there are several current chip and seal roads that if not maintained this year, the county could lose those roads due to extreme weather conditions. Purcell made a motion to add $30,000.00 to the Road and Bridge Department budget from General Revenue for chip and seal, and both Commissioners noted another $10,000.00 would come from somewhere within their own budget for a total of $40,000.00 for chip and seal maintenance this year. Another addition was made to the General Revenue through the Recorder of Deeds office for the buyout of copiers that totaled $9,100.00. The information on the copier buyout came in after budgets had been prepared and submitted. After approval of the amendments to the budget, the Commission voted 3-0 to accept the 2014 budget for Dent County. The meeting was then adjourned.
