The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers smothering defense against the Mountain Grove Panthers allowed the Tigers to win the McDonald’s 19th Annual Panther Classic Friday night in Mountain Grove by the score of 57-46. Salem allowed Mountain Grove only five 3-pointers in the game where they had been averaging 13 in the first two games of the tournament. Salem got five 3-pointers from Cody Whitaker to lead the Tigers with 15 points. Chad Elliott netted 13 points for Salem and Dustin Sercl scored 11 points as Salem improves to 8-11 on the year and the Tigers have won three games in a row for the first time this year. They will be on the road at Houston on Tuesday night in SCA play.
The Salem Lady Tigers will host the Willow Springs Bears in SCA play tonight starting with the JV game at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at about 7:20. Salem enters the game with a 4-14 record and 1-2 in the SCA. Tonight is Breast Cancer Awareness night at the game where there will be special T-shirts available to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Kim English led all scorers with 22 points as No. 2 Missouri remained undefeated at home with a 63-50 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday. Marcus Denmon added 19 points and six boards and Michael Dixon chipped in nine points as the Tigers (19-2, 6-2 Big 12) improved to 12-0 at home this year. Missouri has now won five of its last six after dropping its last contest at Oklahoma State. Missouri will play at Texas tonight at 7:30 and KSMO will join this game in progress following the Lady Tiger game.
The St. Louis Cardinals have avoided arbitration with Jason Motte, signing the reliever to a one-year contract.
