Sheriff Bob Wofford is pleased to announce that the Dent County Sheriff’s Department has recently been awarded two grants. The Department received a $500 grant from Wal-Mart and a $1,656 grant from the American Deputy Sheriff’s Association. The grant from Wal-Mart is anticipated to be used for emergency equipment for the department’s patrol cars. The grant from the American Deputy Sheriff’s Association will be used for additional training, ammunition, reloading equipment and reloading supplies.
Members of U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill’s staff are traveling throughout the state to hear from local residents, and to inform them of the numerous ways her office can be of service to all Missourians. McCaskill’s staff is hosting a series of “Kitchen Table Talks” statewide in order to reach out to constituents, address their questions and concerns, and provide Missourians with the resources necessary to receive assistance from a federal agency. The staff is documenting all problems that constituents are facing, as well as any input that residents have on impending legislation. The findings will be reported back directly to Senator McCaskill and the staff can assist constituents on a range of federal government issues. The “Kitchen Table Talk” meeting in our area will be held on Thursday, January 31st at My Place Restaurant located at 500 East Center in Salem from 9:30 to 11:00 am.
U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the 8th District at Congressional Connection stops. The Congressional Connection Program gets staff out of the office and into communities where they can have these types of meetings on a drop-in basis. Staff members from each office will be responsible for the Congressional Connection program in their respective region, establishing a closer connection between constituents and the staff members who normally serve them. Meetings in our area will be held on Thursday, January 31st at the Chamber of Commerce in Salem from 1:30 to 2:30.
Beginning February 1st through April 15th, South Central Missouri Community Action Agency (SCMCAA), a not-for-profit agency, will be providing FREE TAX PREPARATION for low-income families in Butler, Carter, Dent, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon and Wayne counties during the tax season. In addition to federal and state returns, SCMCAA will be providing FREE tax preparation for individuals who qualify for state credits/refunds such as the Missouri Property Tax Credit and the Missouri Certification of Rent Paid. All eligible families are urged to make an appointment and should also bring social security cards for all household members, all W-2’s, 1099’s, etc. and the birth dates of all household members. If you would like to make an appointment or not sure of whether you would qualify for this FREE SERVICE, call or stop by the closest community action office nearest you. In Dent County the SCMCAA will be making appointments for a Tuesday or Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and they are located at 1405 South Wines in Salem. Taylor Sirois hit four straight free throws in overtime to help lead the Salem Tigers past the Willow Springs Bears in a key SCA matchup Tuesday night, 74-72. Sirois finished the night with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Tiger who also had double digit scoring from C.J. Smith with 21 points and Cody Wofford with 16 points. Salem improves to 15-5 with the win and now has a 2-0 record in the SCA with another tough foe, the Thayer Bobcats, coming to town Friday night for Homecoming. Keith Tkachuk scored twice, as the St. Louis Blues snapped a seven-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. David Backes posted a goal and an assist, and Manny Legace finished the game with 23 saves for the Blues. The Blues with the win halted a five-game losing streak on the road. St. Louis improved to 5-1-1 against teams from the Eastern Conference. The Blues improved to 15-0-2 when leading after two periods. Prior to the game, the Blues recalled defenseman Steve Wagner from Peoria (AHL).
University of Missouri head basketball coach Mike Anderson has suspended four players for tonight's game against Nebraska. Among those who will not see time against the Cornhuskers are seniors Jason Horton (3.1 APG), Marshall Brown (4.9 PPG) and Darryl Butterfield (4.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG). Junior Leo Lyons, who ranks third on the team's scoring list with 11.7 points per game and second in rebounds with 4.4, will also be inactive for the game. Stefhon Hannah, the Tigers' leading scorer (14.7 PPG, 5.3 APG), suffered a fractured jaw and will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Anderson said he will evaluate Hannah's status at a later date. Funeral services for Carl B. De Priest of Cuba, age 85, will be held Thursday night at 7:30 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be Friday morning at 11:00 at the Eternal Peace Cemetery in Wentzville with Military Honors.
Funeral services for John W. Bates of Edgar Springs, age 89, will be Friday afternoon at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.
Funeral services for Charles R. Elliott of Rolla, age 64, will be Friday afternoon at 3:00 at the Immanuel Letheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
