The Dent County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the 2008 Fiscal Year Budget at Monday morning’s regular meeting.  The General Revenue Fund will start the year with total cash available of $969,589 with expected revenues in 2008 of $1,519,124. Expenditures are expected to be $1,645,253, with an estimated ending balance of $843,460.  Areas of change in that budget were additional money for this years upcoming elections, which includes money for election judges, office expenses and publications. Another change was an additional $12,000 for the Prosecuting Attorney’s assistants’ salaries. The Special Road and Bridge Department Fund started the year with net cash available of $155,655 with total expected revenues of $1,230,600. Expenditures are expected to be $1,228,348 and that does include additional money for lube and fuel and white rock. The estimated ending balance for that department is $157,907. The 911 Fund begins the year with total cash available of $90,540 with expected revenues of $52,000.  Expenditures are expected to be $54,875, and that fund should have an estimated ending balance of $87,665. The Law Enforcement Sales Tax Fund has net cash available of $135,883, with total expected revenues of $926,213, with $759,247 coming from sales taxes.  Expected expenditures for the Sheriff’s Department for 2008 will be $702,646 and for the Dent County Jail will be $229,184, bringing the total expenditures of that budget to $931,831, with an estimated ending balance of $130,265. After much discussion and many questions and comments from citizens, Commissioner Bobby Simpson made the motion to approve the budget, Commissioner J.J. Tune seconded the motion and Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles agreed.

An accident happened at 5:25 Saturday evening in Dent Count on Highway 19 about four miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 38-year old Robert Schwehr of Salem was traveling northbound on highway 19. The Pontiac traveled off the ride side of the roadway, struck a culvert, became airborne, and overturned several times ejecting the driver. Schwehr suffered serious injury and was flown to St. John’s in Springfield. A passenger, 20-year old David Wahl of Marble Hill suffered minor injuries and refused treatment. Schwehr was not wearing a seat restraint and Wahl was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Pontiac was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 538, 539 and 658 and driveway pipes would be installed on Dent County Road 418.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done and white rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 330 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 212.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that on Wednesday afternoon he would be attending a Youth Leadership Academy that will be held at the Commons.  Skiles said the academy is held for high school freshman and sophomores and he would be speaking to them about county government.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that Wednesday is the last day to request an absentee mail out ballot and Monday is the last day to absentee vote.  Curley also wanted to let everyone know that the clerk’s office will be open this Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm for absentee voting.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 12:45 Saturday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about 10 miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Jeep Wrangler driven by 17-year old Dalton Wilson of Houston, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Wilson then overcorrected and the Jeep exited left side of the roadway, struck dirt embankment and overturned into a wooded area. Wilson suffered minor injuries and was transported to Salem Hospital by Dent County Ambulance. Two 17-year old passengers, Skyler Ward and Joshua York, both of Houston, suffered minor injuries and were transported to Salem Hospital by Dent County Ambulance. They were all wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Jeep Wrangler was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

Allison Jones scored 12 points while Jessica Brand and Hannah Kettner each added 11 points as the Salem Lady Tigers blasted the Lady Eagles of Mountain View/Liberty, 51-30. Salem is now 14-5 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. They will be at Mountain Grove Thursday.

It’s “white out” night tonight at the Salem High School Gym when Salem faces Willow Springs in a key SCA contest. Coach Wrightsman is asking everyone to wear white shirts to the game. The JV action starts at 6:00 and the varsity game will follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio. Salem has a 14-5 record this year.

The St. Louis Blues will try to end a seven game losing streak as they travel tonight to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs. You can hear the first period on KSMO starting at 6:30, and thethird period will be played back on a taped delayed basis after Salem Basketball.

The Cardinals signed pitcher Todd Wellemeyer to a one-year deal yesterday.

Funeral services for Helen Louise Keithly Gray Harter of Ozark, formerly of Salem, age 76, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ethel Sisco of Salem, age 91, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Martha E. Treece of Rolla, age 88, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Sharp Cemetery in Maries County.

Funeral services for Carl B. De Priest of Cuba, age 85, will be held Thursday night at 7:30 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be Friday morning at 11:00 at the Eternal Peace Cemetery in Wentzville with Military Honors.

Funeral services for John W. Bates of Edgar Springs, age 89, will be Friday afternoon at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.

Funeral Services for William (Willie) Wiley, of Rolla, age 53, will be held Monday at 12:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the Flat Grove Cemetery.
