The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the hospital library. For the month of December, the hospital had revenues over expenses of $2,825 before taxes and $44,274 after tax collections. Comptroller Stephanie Wofford commented that the hospital received a Medicare settlement of $264,000 that will be reflected in the January summary. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that there were 732 emergency room visits with 63 transfers, 177 ambulance runs, 20 surgeries, 1,210 outpatient registrations, 301 Home Health visits, 6,342 lab tests, 903 radiological procedures, 228 CT scans, 30 MRI’s, 256 rehabs, 126 dialysis treatments and 286 clinical visits. Hospital administrator Dennis Pryor said that the hospital auxiliary will now be meeting on the first Tuesday of every month, and they have five new members. He said that the auxiliary has added information about their organization to the patient packets, and they will hold their Avon fundraiser on February 6th in the hospital library. Pryor said that the new Insure program through the state of Missouri is supposed to go into Phase 1 in March, go into Phase 2 in the summer and begin Phase 3 next January. Pryor said that there were only six inpatient surveys returned and 98 ER questionnaires returned and all gave high ratings to the hospital. Chief of Staff Dr. Yvonne Prince gave her report that included the new Chief of Staff for the next two years would be Dr. Julius Punzalan with Dr. Ryan Pharr acting as Vice-Chief of Staff and Dr. Ralph Ford as Secretary. She said that they approved seven active staff physician re-appointments pending two license renewal applications, and 33 courtesy staff physician reappointments with one license application pending renewal. Pryor reported that only Judy Thompson signed up for the opening on the hospital board and she will be sworn-in in April. He also reported that little work has been done on the Physicians Office Building due to the cold weather as expenses to date have totaled $296,076 toward their budgeted total of $931,500. Pryor announced that in February the hospital will hold a “Heart Month” community service where the community can come in and get a lipid profile that includes checking your cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides for just $15 on February 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 in the morning. The board then accepted the Conflict of Interest Policy and accepted a $5,000 donation from the Judson Young Memorial Foundation. They set up a budget meeting for February 12th at 5:00 in the hospital library and approved the purchase of a  five-year contract for a Biosite meter for the Laboratory from Stratus at a cost of $32,595 per year that will save the hospital about $100,000 over the five year contract. The board approved the budgeted purchase of a Lab Desk Chair from ABS for $230; the purchase of a computer, monitor and license for the lab from CDW-G for $1,455; the purchase of a CPSI Terminal for the Register in the Dietary department for $1,033 from CDW-G, the purchase of side rail seizure pads for acute care from Cardinal Health for $363 and the purchase of a blanket warmer for the emergency room for $5,220 from Burrows. Missouri State Treasurer Sarah Steelman was in Salem Friday on what was to be a tour for her re-election, but instead she sought input from citizens and their thoughts on her running for Governor. Steelman said that one hour after she announced her re-election bid for treasurer, Governor Matt Blunt announced that he would not be seeking a second term. She said that in her heart she feels she should run for the position, but still has to talk it over more with her family before a definite decision is made. On Saturday, Steelman made it official announcing her candidacy for Governor on the Republican ticket. Before being elected State Treasurer in 2004, Steelman was elected in 1998 and 2002 to serve as Senator for Missouri’ 16th Senatorial District.
