Chief Keith Steelman of the Salem Police Department reported that at about 11:00 Thursday morning, an individual walking along the wooded line next to Wal-Mart in Salem discovered human skeletal remains. The Salem Police responded to the location on Highway 32-72 West and processed the evidence at the scene. With the help of the Dent County Coroner Gina White, the police will be sending off evidence to a crime lab with the hope of identifying the remains.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5580 and that workers would be out repairing or replacing road signs. He reported that workers are repairing tire chains for the trucks and graders, that they are installing a transmission cooler on Dent County Truck #117, and that they are installing a hydraulic pump for the spreader box on truck #119. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials were going to be added to Dent County Roads 2090, 2200 and 4290. He stated that workers would be screening brown rock and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 3190 and 3335. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Legislative Day in Jefferson City representing the MRPC. They discussed with the area legislators regional transportation needs and talked about unfounded mandates that the state keeps instituting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that absentee voting will continue at the courthouse through February 6th and the lastday to request a mail-out ballot will be on February 1st. Voters will have to chose a party from the four on the ballot. Polls will be open on February 7th from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Curley said that the deadline to register to vote for the Municipal Election in April is March 7th. She also stated that candidate filing for county offices will begin on February 28th at the courthouse. Those persons who are interested in running for a county office should go by the clerk’s office and find out the policies, procedures and qualifications necessary to run for the office or call 729-4144. Curley said that the 2012 Budget Hearing for the county would be held on Monday, January 30th at 7:00 at the Dent County Judicial Building. All three commissioners signed a resolution concerning personal financial disclosure. The commissioners then voted 3-0 to accept the bid from Erb Equipment for grader blades for $4,950 and the bid from Metal Culverts, Inc. for culverts for $15,919.22. The board then met in closed session to discuss real estate. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is hosting a Prescribed Burn Workshop tonight from 6:00 to 9:00 at the Salem TCRC. If you have an interest in performing prescribed burns on your property or the property of others, this workshop will provide the tools on how to properly hold a prescribed burn, as well as how it can help ecology and the wildlife in the area. The workshop will also introduce you to other people in the area who do prescribed burns where they may want to get together when they burn. The workshop will feature speakers, videos and an open discussion with the attendees. There is no charge to attend. Please call Mike Fiaoni at the Conservation Office at 729-3182, ext 224 and leave your name, the number in your party as well as your phone number. Reservations to the Prescribed Burn Workshop need to be made no later than noon today.

Darian Grogan scored 13 points to lead the Salem Lady Tigers to their second straight win as they defeated the Steelville Lady Cardinals, 42-26. Kaytlyn Wells added eight points for Salem while Emily Whitaker and Julia Callahan each scored eight points for Steelville. Salem is 4-10 on the year, 1-2 in the SCA and they will host the Willow Springs Lady Bears Monday night at the SHS gym.

The Salem Tiger Boy’s Basketball team will face the Mountain Grove Panthers tonight at 6:00 in the final game of the round robin McDonalds' Panther Classic. Salem is 7-11 on the year and you can hear this game on KSMO and ksmoradio.com.

The 2nd ranked Missouri Tigers will host Texas Tech on Saturday. Missouri is 18-2 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO, starting with the pre-game show at noon.

Sign-ups for the City of Salem Winter Youth League Basketball for boys and girls in First through Sixth Grades will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory) located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Signups will be today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and the FINAL SIGN-UP will be held on Saturday, January 28th from 9:00 am until noon. The cost is $20.00 per child. Funeral services for Mary ‘Linda’ Dablemont of Columbus, OH and formerly of Rolla, age 73, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr in Rolla. Interment will be in the Wynn Maxwell Cemetery. 

Memorial services for Leonard Patrick Stephenson of Spokane, Washington and formerly of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at the Riverview Chapel in Spokane, Washington. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Spokane at www.hospiceofspokane.org.

Funeral services for Robert ‘Bob’ Sullivan of Steelville, age 85, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Vistiation will be held from 9:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Graveside service for Sally Ann Luhring of Steelville, age 53, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville.

Funeral Service for Calvin W. Conaway of Salem, age 70, will be held Monday, January 30th at 1:00 pm at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetary in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the Red Cross. All arrangments are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Betty Marie Fetters of Salem, age 78, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Wednesday morning from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial services for Harold R. “Fritz” Norfleet, Jr. of Salem, age 64, will be held Saturday, February 4th at 1:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
