An accident happened at 7:21 Tuesday morning in Dent County on Highway 32/72 one mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Tracker driven by 25-year old Amy Thomas of Salem was traveling westbound on highway 32/72 East. Thomas lost control on the ice-covered roadway, went off the right side of the road and struck an embankment. Thomas suffered minor injury and was transported by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Tracker sustained moderate damage and was left at the scene. Thomas will make arrangements to remove the vehicle.

U.S. Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond announced that a Listening Post Forum would be held in Salem. A representative of the Senator, Tom Schulte will be available to Missourians at the Listening Post today at 2:00 at the Dent County Courthouse. Listening Posts are meetings with Missourians held by Bond’s staff to discuss their concerns with federal policies and agencies. In addition to the Listening Posts, Bond’s office extends one-on-one service to all Missourians experiencing problems with the federal government. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an assault, mental commitment order, traffic violation, and a leave without paying. On Tuesday, January 19^th, at 11:45 a.m. a vehicle was stopped for investigation of an assault. During the investigation it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle, a 19 year-old male of Alton, Illinois, had a suspended drivers license. He was arrested for driving while suspended, and he posted bond and was released with a court date. Later that evening at 4:30 p.m. an officer transported a 39 year-old male of Farmington to the Center for Psychiatric Services in Phelps County in lieu of a mental commitment order. Further on that evening at 4:52 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 38 year-old female of Cuba for driving while drugged. She was issued summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, January 20^th, at 3:38 p.m. an officer was detailed to Gas Plus Convenience Store located in the 500 block of East Highway 32 in reference a leaving without paying. Investigation of the report revealed the driver of a white 1995 Nissan with Illinois registration pumped $29.85 in fuel and left without paying.  Please contact the Salem Police Department at 573-729-4242 if you have any information regarding the leaving without paying, which is still under investigation.

State Representative Jason Smith filed House Bill #1805 that would provide incentives for small businesses, which would help put Missourians back to work. Smith’s Jobs, Opportunity and Business Success for Main Street Missouri bill would promote small business growth and help put Missourians back to work by offering tax credits to small businesses that hire individuals who currently have received unemployment benefits for at least the past two months. Smith’s bill would provide a tax credit to small businesses who hire individuals that have been receiving unemployment benefits for at least sixty days.  In addition to the original tax credit that could be earned; a business could also be eligible to receive an additional tax credit for those employees, which maintain employment for more than twenty-four consecutive months.  Furthermore, to promote new businesses in Missouri, this bill would waive the filing fees by Secretary of State for new limited liability companies or corporations to help promote new businesses in Missouri for the next year effective July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.

The Planning & Zoning Commission of the City of Salem will hold a public meeting called Chairman Sean Curley on Monday, February 1^st at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 2020 North Washington beginning at 6:45 pm. After approval of the January 4^th minutes, the Board will discuss vacating a portion of West Gibbs Street, requested by Jerry Hammons at 604 South Elmer. The Planning & Zoning Commission of the City of Salem meeting is open to the public.
