The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Pat Hanson requested that gravel be added to Dent County Road 3150 and that it also be graded. She also requested that additional gravel be added to the pile where the road is closed at the bridge. She went onto say that a number of the residents on the road would like to see the bridge re-opened and stated that she would be willing to give land to the project for a new bridge. Commissioner Larson stated he would look into the situation, and would check out some literature that Hanson provided on building affordable bridges. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6130, and that an air valve that was replaced on a truck was defective and will have to be replaced again. He said that it is too cold to grade, and that the county workers continue to have a problem with downed road signs including the stop sign on Dent County Road 5010. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that the bridge rail on Dent County Road 2050 had been repaired. Since grading can’t be done, he said that the workers are getting the plows and spreaders put on the trucks in preparation of the upcoming storm. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that final approval was given for the 175-watt back-up generator for the Red Cross shelter at the Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee. The recommendations will be sent to the state for approval and funding. Skiles also said that he contacted Public Health Epidemiologist Gale Carlson with the Department of Health and Senior Services concerning an air quality evaluation at the annex. He said that the county would need to send a letter asking what needs to be done and they would be there in about three weeks to check out the building at no cost. At the last meeting, Dent County Coroner Gina White visited the annex and asked if she could have an office in that building and the commissioners agreed. Mayor Gary Brown of the City of Salem asked the commission if they could find a way to donate to the fireworks display on July 4^th. No decision was made but the commission would consider it. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened at 8:05 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about one mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 GMC pickup driven by 19-year old William Richter of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32. The GMC drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a fence. Richter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC sustained minor damage and driven from the scene.

An accident happened at 7:30 Saturday morning in Phelps County on Highway 68 about 145 miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Nissan driven by 35-year old Rhonda Rainey of Salem, lost control of the car and it ran off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch. Rainey suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Sentra sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by Spurgeon Towing.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 4:35 on Highway 63 in Texas County about six miles south of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Ford Explorer driven by 22-year old Shaine Blazier of Licking, slid on a patch of ice on the roadway, went off the road into a ditch and overturned several times. Blazier suffered serious injuries as he was ejected from the Explorer. He was taken to the Texas County Memorial Hospital by the Texas County Ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Explorer was totaled and removed from the scene by A-1 Towing of Houston.

The Salem Upper Elementary School Honors Choir has been selected to sing the National Anthem at the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on July 31^st against the Houston Astros. Congratulations to Julie Cartwright and the Upper Elementary Honors Choir. In the near future, they will have tickets available for the game for those who are interested in attending.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball game with Sullivan last night was postponed due to the inclement weather. No make-up date was announced. Salem will be back in action at Waynesville this Thursday night. Salem is 7-9 on the year.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers are scheduled to play at Steelville tonight in non-conference action. If played, the JV contest will be at 6:00 with the varsity contest to follow. You will be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com if the game is played. Salem is 8-9 on the year.

The Kansas City Royals signed pitcher Zack Greinke to a four-year contract Monday, keeping him with the team through the 2012 season. The 25-year-old right-hander enjoyed a breakout year in 2008, achieving career-highs in wins (13), earned run average (3.47), strikeouts (183), quality starts (23) and innings pitched (202 1/3). He finished the season 13-10 and his strikeout total equaled that of teammate Gil Meche, which tied the pair for fifth in the American League. His ERA was the lowest of all Kansas City arms with at least 162 innings pitched since Kevin Appier posted a 3.40 ERA in 1997. Originally a first-round pick -- sixth overall -- by the Royals in the 2002 amateur draft, Greinke has compiled a 34-45 mark with a 4.28 ERA in 144 games (103 starts) for Kansas City over five seasons.

St. Louis Rams have named Dick Curl assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, Paul Ferraro to the defensive staff and Frank Leonard to the offensive staff.

Graveside services for Barbara Mae Light of Rolla, age 65, will be held Wednesday at the Rhea Cemetery in rural Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Rhea Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for Velma Hanks of Steelville, age 83, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 Wednesday. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Charles Hampton of Salem, age 76, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Margaret Land of Salem, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery. Memorails are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.

Funeral services for Ruth J. Lacy of St. James, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 Saturday morning. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Tri-County Humane Society.

Funeral services for Donald Crocker are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
