The Dent County Commissioners held their quarterly night meeting Monday at the Judicial Building. In the proposed budget, anticipated revenues in the General Revenue Fund for 2011 are $1,468,460 while there are $1,645,394 in expected expenses meaning that the county expects to spend $176,934 more than it collects in the upcoming year. This will leave an ending cash balance in the General Revenue at the end of 2011 of $992,713.21. The Road and Bridge Fund proposed budget for 2011 shows expected revenues of $1,203,300 with expected expenditures of $1,414,858; which is $211,000 more expenditures than revenues. This will leave an expected fund balance at the end of the 2011 of $241,942. The Dent County Assessment Fund budget shows anticipated revenues of $189,763 in 2011 with anticipated expenses of $252,790 leaving an ending balance at the end of 2011 of $96,671.24. In the 911 proposed budget for 2011, estimated revenues are $49,250 with anticipated expenses of $50,444.75, which will leave an ending balance of $97,427.40. The Sheriff’s Department budget also shows more anticipated expenses in 2011 than revenues leaving an estimated cash balance at the end of 2011 of $110,365, down from the beginning balance of $143,638. Presiding Dent County Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that in the Title III fund, which is money received from the Forest Service, there is a current balance of $132,000 with another $35,000 expected this year, which would leave a balance of $168,000. Also reported was the fact that at the end of 2011, the County would more than likely have to return that money to the Feds. The Dent County Commissioners then approved the budget for 2011 by a vote of 3-0.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Thursday, January 20^th at 4:58 in the afternoon, ten firefighters responded to a call on Dent County Road 2250 at the residence of James Brown to extinguish a fire. The scene was under control with an hour. At 7:00 that evening, 11 firefighters responded to the fire station to create a landing zone. Then at 11:47 that night, eleven firefighters responded to Highway 32 to assist EMS crews. At 11:56 that same night, eleven firefighters responded to a call on Dent County Road 6160 to the residence of James Stevens to extinguish a chimney or flue fire. The scene was under control with in an hour of arrival. On Friday, January 21^st at 2:15 in the afternoon, six firefighters responded to a call on Highway 32 to the Robert Harris residence to extinguish a chimney or flue fire. The scene was under control at 3:16 that afternoon. Then at 10:05 that night, six firefighters responded to a call on Dent County Road 292 to provide advanced life support for EMS crews. On Saturday, January 22^nd at 4:53 in the afternoon, seven firefighters responded to a call to the 200 block of South Warfel to provide first aid and to check for injuries as well as assist EMS crews. The scene was under control at 5:02 that evening. At 10:16 that night, fire district personnel were driving down the street and noticed a flue fire in the 600 block of East Roosevelt. Personnel notified the residents and had the fire district paged out. The scene was under control by 10:39 pm. A total of eight firefighters responded to the call.

They include Larissa Swift on the Clarinet; Gabby Spuhler, Shyanne Fuller, Brandon Pike, & Tricia Stewart playing Trumpet; Jessica Medley on the French horn; Joe Schott & Josiah Beckett playing Trombone; Frank Schott on the Euphonium; Josh Knueven & Emily Pace on the Tuba; and Dustin Anderson on Percussion. A special honor goes to Jessica Medley, Joe Schott, & Josh Knueven for being chosen First Pick All-Conference. The band is under the direction of Hillary Alexander.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 15^th. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations are still being accepted for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll. The categories for volunteer recognition are:  Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Historic Preservation, Humanitarianism and Youth (an adult or adult organization or a youth or youth organization.) Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2010. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees.  The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available at the Salem Library, the TCRC, the Bank of Salem, US Bank, Progressive Ozark Bank and Town and Country Bank. Nominations must be submitted to SACBA P.O. Box 732, Salem, MO. 65560 no later than Monday, January 31^st.
