The Salem Police Department released their reports for January 13th through the 22nd for property damage and drugs. On January 13th at 2:24 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to property damage. The report revealed an 18-year old Salem male had broken a window and kicked a screen door at a residence. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released. On January 19th at 5:45 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of West Scenic Rivers Blvd in reference to property damage. The report revealed person(s) unknown damaged the canvass top of a tan 2003 Jeep Wrangler by making cuts through it on the passenger side of the vehicle. The damage is valued at $700. The report is still under investigation. On January 22nd at 9:04 in the evening, an officer, while investigating an unrelated incident, discovered drugs while at a residence in the 1100 block of South McCarthur. Further investigation led to the arrest of 24-year old David William Wells of Salem and 21-year old Rachel Michelle Dixon Salem. Both have been charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana, and one felony count of distribute/deliver/manufacture/produce or attempt to or possess with intent to distribute/deliver/manufacture/produce a controlled substance. Bond was set at $25,000 each. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage reports is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold it’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 27th. The dinner will be held at The Commons at 6:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased at The Salem News, the SACBA office at the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are being sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are: education, community enhancement, arts and culture, youth (for an adult or adult organization), youth (for a youth or youth organization), humanitarianism, and historic preservation. Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2006. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available at the Salem Public Library, The Salem News, the Bank of Salem, US Bank, Progressive Ozark Bank and Town & Country Bank. No SACBA board members, project or committee is eligible for nomination. Nominations must be submitted by no later than Wednesday, January 31st by 5:00 pm to the SACBA, Box 732, Salem, MO. 65560.

The George O. White State Forest Nursery in Licking is taking orders for 2007. Now is the time to order tree seedlings from the Missouri state forest nursery for delivery this spring. This year’s catalog lists dozens of species, including 13 different oaks, six pines, black walnut, pecan and more than a dozen shrubs. Other tree seedlings available this year include tulip poplar, sweet gum, bald cypress, silver maple, river birch, black cherry and Kentucky coffee. Plants come in bundles of 25 seedlings for $3 to $24, depending on species. Bundles with plant assortments for specific purposes are $12 to $16. A $5 shipping and handling charge is added to each order, plus 5.725 percent sales tax. The nursery is now accepting orders and for a full list of trees and shrubs available through the state forest nursery. An accident happened in Phelps County on Highway 8 about six miles east of St. James Wednesday night at 9;00 near the Meramec Spring Park that left a Salem woman with injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Chevy Cavalier driven by 28-year old Eva D. Gillam of Salem, went off the left side of the road, went down an embankment and overturned. Gillam suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James Ambulance. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing, and Gillam was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will try to get back on the winning track as they travel to Waynesville tonight to face the Lady Tigers starting with the JV game at 6:00 and the varsity game will follow. Salem is 14-3 on the year.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers resume play tomorrow night as they will be in St. James to face the Tigers starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity match to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio.

Stefhon Hannah scored 14 points to lead the Missouri Tigers to a 79-65 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes in a Big 12 matchup from the Coors Events Center. Matt Lawrence added 14 points for Missouri (12-6, 1-4 Big 12), while J. T. Tiller tallied 12 points and Keon Lawrence contributed 10. Missouri shot 47.2 percent from the field in the first half and connected on 6-of-15 attempts from long range to take a 41-28 lead into the break. The Tigers continued to shoot well in the second stanza, posting a solid 54.2 percent shooting effort en route to the 14-point victory.

Columbus forward Rick Nash, Minnesota's Brian Rolston, Yanic Perreault of the Phoenix Coyotes and Martin Havlat of Chicago all scored two goals, as the NHL All-Star Game returned from a three-yearhiatus with a 12-9 victory by the Western Conference over the Eastern Conference at American Airlines Center. Buffalo sniper Daniel Briere garnered the MVP honors with a goal and fourassists for the Eastern Conference. The Blues Bill Guerin had three asists in the contest. The St. Louis Blues, who entered the All-Star Break as the hottest team in the NHL, will come off the All-Star Break with games against Detroit Friday night and Nashville on Saturday night.

Obituaries   [TOP]

Funeral services for Porter Lee Warden of Salem, age 84, will be this afternoon at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Warden Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Helen Edna Turnbough of Steelville, age 81, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery in Davisville.
