The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. During the summary of operations for the month of December, 74 patients were admitted. The summary showed that inpatient revenue was below budget, while outpatient revenue was above budget, resulting in an increase from operations of $720,030, and an excess of revenues over expenses of $773,711.The cash flow statement showed an increase in cash of $1,038,088, mostly due to a reimbursement of $880,000 for the electronic health records conversion. The days in accounts receivable was 44, which is down from 47 in November. There were 74 acute care patients admitted with an average or 7.9 patients per day. In the Director of Nursing report for the month of December, there were 887 emergency room visits with 63 transfers. The average turn around time in the ER was 119 minutes for the month. There were a total of 188 ambulance runs with 182 patients being assessed, 15 surgery cases, 1,579 outpatient registrations, 122 Home Health visits, 7,730 lab tests, 856 radiological procedures, 159 CT scans, 27 MRI scans, 6 nuclear med scans, 2,214 cardiopulmonary procedures, 453 rehab treatments, 210 dialysis treatments and 328 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that work on the lagoon and water lines for the sprayers is scheduled to be completed in February, but completion does depend on the weather. The next project meeting for Hospice at SMDH is scheduled with Dr. Prince on February 8th. Board Member Joe Brand reported that the Salem Memorial District Hospital now has a foundation in place, but at this time, only employees can contribute. Carol Lacy stated beginning February 3rd, surveys will be available to the public to complete to help determine community health needs. Surveys will be available in many businesses, churches, Senior Center, schools as well as online on the SMDH.net website. Data collected will help determine the Community Health Needs Assessment mandated by the federal government due by June of this year. Pryor reported that Joe Brand filed for another 6-year term in District 6, and Ken Sheriff filed for completing the 4-year term in District 4. They were unopposed so no election will need to take place. The Board then approved a conflict of interest policy that is required for newly elected Board Members. It was noted that Dent County as well as the State of Missouri reported less flu cases than most parts of the United States. Pryor indicated that Health Screenings will be held February 13th and 14th, also on May 8th and 9th and the final health screening will be held September 11th and 12th. Health Screenings will be held in the outpatient registration area from 6:00 to 9:00 am. Carol Lacy explained to the Board about an issue on the lack of documentation of required paperwork that took place in the Long Term Care Unit at the hospital. It was noted there had not been any issues since 1994, and she insisted that the issue is being dealt with and will be resolved. The Board then approved the budgeted purchase of new backup appliance hardware for Information Systems from Dell for $6,677, and new backup appliance software for Information Systems from SHI for $8,294. They further approved a Dual Controller Storage System storage device for Information Systems from Dell for $11,958 with a five-year warranty. Also budgeted was an additional barcode scanner for Information Systems from GHA for $794 with a 3-year warranty, and a replacement laptop from Dell for $984 with a 3-year warranty. The Board approved the non-budgeted purchase of a replacement low bed for Long Term Care from MMS for $1,430, and Radio System Upgrade for the ambulance from Wireless USA for $9,454. The Board voted to go into Closed Session.
An accident occurred at 4:25 Monday afternoon in Texas County on Highway 63 about three miles south of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car driven by 53-year old George Falterman of Licking pulled into the path of a 2001 Volvo driven by 69-year old William Senf of Elk Creek. William Senf and an occupant in the Volvo, 69-year old Sharon Senf of Elk Creek, suffered serious injuries and were flown to the Cox South Hospital in Springfield. Falterman suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Texas County Memorial Hospital by a patrol vehicle. They were all wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Jay’s Automotive of Houston. The accident was investigated by Team 3 of the Major Crash Investigation Unit and officers from the Texas County Sheriff’s Department.
Jackie Lough of Salem is looking forward to celebrating his recent $100,000 Missouri Lottery win. Not only will Lough’s windfall allow him to treat his entire family, consisting of two children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, to a lavish steak dinner, but he’s also planning on using the winnings to indulge in “some joys that you wouldn’t normally have.” The 67-year-old former The Doe Run Company employee has been retired for about 12 years. While claiming his prize, Lough recalled the moment he unveiled the prize amount on his “$1,000,000 Classic Cash” ticket at Casey’s General Store on South McArthur in Salem. He joked that he must’ve looked shocked, because a clerk asked him if he was OK. After catching his breath, Lough received congratulatory hugs and handshakes from fellow patrons before heading home. Lough summed up his Lottery-winning experience by declaring how thankful he feels. “I’ve had a good life, and this is just icing on the cake,” he concluded.

The Salem Tigers will face the Cabool Bulldogs this evening at 7:30 in the final round of the 20th McDonald's Classic Tournament in Mountain Grove. Salem is 1-1 in the tournament and 7-10 on the year. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be at Steelville tonight to face the Lady Cardinals in non-conference play after a six-day lay off. The Lady Tigers are 7-9 on the year.
The St. Louis Blues will host Nashville tonight at the Scottrade Center at 7:00. The Blues are 2-1-0 on the year and KSMO will join the game in progress following the Salem game.
