The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 6220, 6410 and 6470. He went on to state that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5380, that work is being done in the shop on the spreader for Dent County Truck #115, and that work is being done on a hydraulic motor on Dent County Truck #119. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials would be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2080, 2083, 2240 and 2270. Larson reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 3330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending the annual MRPC Day at the Capital today in Jefferson City to voice the priorities of this area that were discussed at the MRPC meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues at the courthouse until February 6^th, and requests to mail out a ballot must be made by February 1^st. The Commissioners opened bids for grader blades and culverts at 10:00 and there were three bids for each. The county received bids for grader blades from Dowd Supply for $5,157; from Vibrock Sales, LLC for $5,500.20 and from Erb Equipment for $4,950. They also received bids for culverts from Contech Construction Products for $17,427.54; from Vibrock Sales, LLC for $16,790.54 and from Metal Culverts, Inc. for $15,919.22. The commissioners will review the bids to make sure that they comply with the specs provided and also see if shipping is extra or included before making a decision. The commission then heard from Ken Martin about placing a memorial bench on the south side courthouse lawn facing Fourth Street in memory of Carl and Rosalee Emory. The bench would be installed by Salem Monument and Martin said the family would be responsible for the maintenance and care of the bench. The commissioners wanted to think about the proposal and consider if this would be setting a precedent for the placing of personal monuments on the courthouse lawn. At the last meeting, Jason Murphy and Jason Silva with Great Rivers Association came in to discuss the construction plan for the bridge replacement project over Sinkin Creek on Dent County Road 5680. Forest Service Engineer Amy Sullivan and Tom Haines from the US Forest Service were in attendance for the discussion. After the discussion, Great Rivers Association will come back in a couple of weeks with an updated project agreement. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public. 

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Monday, January 16^th at 2:20 in the afternoon, three firefighters responded to the 900 block of West Scenic Rivers BLVD for a medical assist of manpower. All units were back in service at 2:50 pm. On Thursday, January 19^th 6:01 in the evening, a total of 14 firefighters responded to East Franklin Street to a family dwelling. Firefighters extinguished a chimney or flue fire and were back in service at 7:06. At 6:23 that same evening, a total of 15 firefighters responded to the 700 block of East Fourth Street to a family dwelling. Firefighters conducted an investigation for carbon monoxide and found a faulty detector. All units were back in service at 8:55 pm. On Friday, January 20^th at 6:38 in the evening, a total of 13 firefighters responded to Highway 72. After investigation, firefighters determined an authorized controlled burn, and were back in service at 6:50 pm. On Sunday, January 22^nd at 1:55 in the early morning a total of seven firefighters responded to the 200 block of South Park Street to a family dwelling. Upon arrival firefighters found a mobile home fully involved. The Salem Police Department was on the scene and had notified Salem utilities to be disconnected. Firefighters extinguished the fire and all units were back in service at 5:35 am. On Monday, January 23^rd at 2:07 in the early morning, a total of seven firefighters responded to the 600 block of Elmer Street to a family dwelling. Upon arrival firefighters found an abandoned house fully involved. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and at 2:35 that same morning, the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office was called to investigate.

The Salem Quiz Bowl Teams took Second Place in the Waynesville Invitational Academic Tournament on January 14th. This is a very competitive tournament with schools from around the state attending. The format used at this tournament is not the normal MSHSAA format that the teams usually see, but a college format that can be very challenging. Jacob Gale scored a personal best and a team high score, with a total of 310 points. Eighteen teams competed in the tournament. Congratulations Quiz Bowl Tigers!!!
