In closed session Tuesday night, the Salem Board of Aldermen unanimously approved to hold off looking for a new city administrator until after the April Municipal election. Until such a time as a new search is completed, the board approved by a 4-0 vote to have Economic Development Director Ray Walden serve as the interim City Administrator in addition to his Economic Development Director duties. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the December meeting, the summary of operations for the month of December showed emergency room visits were down as were outpatient registrations that helped create a loss from operations of $248,952 and an after tax loss of $197,077. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated that the extremely cold weather, along with adverse driving conditions and holidays were all contributing factor to the loss. There was a cash decrease of $184,075 for the month of December that led to the days in account receivables going from 42 to 43, which is still outstanding. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that there were 692 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 117 minutes. Also during the month, there were 160 ambulance runs with 154 patients being assessed. In December, there were 20 surgery cases, 1,457 outpatient registrations, 131 home health visits, 7,347 lab tests, 807 radiology procedures, 135 CT scans, 19 MRI scans, 13 nuclear med scans, 1,989 cardiopulmonary procedures, 433 rehab treatments, 178 dialysis treatments, and 249 clinic visits. Lacy also reported that confirmed cases of influenza picked up in numbers the last half of December. Until then, there had only been three cases reported, but as of the end of the year, a total of 25 cases had been confirmed. The board reviewed the quarterly patient satisfaction surveys for the emergency room, inpatient services and rural health clinics. There were 154 survey responses from patients in the Emergency Room and all categories came back at 98% or above. There were 23 survey responses for inpatient services and all areas were solid with the exception of when the patient was ready to leave the hospital. The category of getting written information about the patients’ recovery needed some improvement. For the rural medical clinics, 223 responses were received and all were 92% or above. In the Chief of Staffs report, a Med-Staff meeting was held on January 20th and the 2014 reappointments of active staff and courtesy staff physicians was reviewed. The Board approved the reappointments of current active staff and courtesy staff, with the exception of Dr. Shiraz Daud, M.D. from Pulmonology and Dr. Paul Schaefer, D.O. from Emergency Medicine who did not reapply. Administrator Dennis Pryor reported the election filing ended for the hospital board for District #1 and incumbent Judy Thompson was the only one to file so the hospital will not have to have an election. The Board then approved with one objection to purchase two replacement touch screen monitors for in the ER from Directec for $1,404. The Board then approved the conflict of interest policy before voting to go into closed session.
