The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their meeting Thursday night. After adding a couple of items to the agenda, the Board approved the agenda and consent agenda. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf then presented Certificates of Appreciation to each of the Board members for their service to the students of the district. Rumpf then updated the Board on the filings that ended on Tuesday. There are two seats available on the Board and three people have filed for those seats. Those filing included incumbents Chris Heavin and Carrie Snider as well as Barry Wainwright has also filed. There was a video presentation on PBIS, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Support, at the Upper Elementary along with various members of the teams implementing PBIS. Members of the Board asked questions about the program as well as giving very positive support for the program. The Social Studies EOC scores were presented showing a score of 77% advanced & proficient this year compared to 65% last year, and a 23% score for basic & below basic. There were two students that received perfect scores and they were Ashley Crocker and Samuel Gale. After a brief analysis of the budget, Rumpf noted that overall Salem R-80 is in good shape. Rumpf then updated the Board on the Superintendent Search. A total of 14 applications have been requested, but none have been returned at this point. The Board then saw an MSBA update via video and a discussion was held on the District getting ready to enter into MSIP 5. The comparison was made that with MSIP 1 through 4, reviews were every five years, but with MSIP 5, districts would be reviewed annually. Rumpf reported that the rural school administrators would like to continue the Junior High Football Cooperative. The Judson-Young Foundation made a donation of $25,000. The donation was to be split with $7,000 going to the baseball field, $1,000 is going to the Golf Team and $17,000 was to go to the Strategic Plan of supplies and equipment. It was noted that more Clickers would be purchased. In New Business, the Board approved 6-0 the Board Policy GBH, the "Amy Hester" Act focusing on appropriate communication between school personnel and students via electronic media. Although Salem R-80 has a policy in place, this policy provides the most up-to-date information for such a policy. The Board accepted the retirement of Patricia Happel with Food Service effective July 1, 2012. The Board then approved 6-0 a resolution to support the State of Missouri Vision Project plan for education. The Board had previously advertised for phone bids for the school district. A total of three bids were received and reviewed and the Board voted to go with Advanced Telephone out of Conway for $63,500. Advanced Telephone has been working with the current system for the past few years and was the only company submitting a bid that met all the requirements that the district had asked for. Work is expected to begin at the end of the current school year and be ready for operation at the start of school in the fall. There will also be enough time upon completion for two weeks of training for staff members before the school year begins. The Board then talked about formulating a way for Board members to gain more information and training of how to be better school board members. The Board then voted to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

Turkey hunters have until February 29^th to apply for managed hunts during Missouri’s 2012 spring turkey season. All 19 managed turkey hunts are listed in the “2012 Spring Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information" booklet. The booklet and website have application instructions, outlook information on Missouri’s turkey population, conservation areas where turkey hunting is allowed, related regulations and more. The print version of the booklet will be available from hunting permit vendors and at Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offices in mid-February. The booklet, along with other information on spring turkey hunting, is available online at www.mdc.mo.gov by searching “Spring Turkey Hunting.” In addition to 11 hunts open to all firearms turkey hunters, this year’s offerings include a managed hunt for archers, five hunts for youths age 11 through 15 and two hunts for people with disabilities. Managed hunts will take place during the youth turkey season, March 31^st to April 1^st, or regular turkey season, April 16^th through May 6^th. Hunters may apply individually or in groups of up to three for most hunts. An individual applying as a member of a party has the same chance of being drawn as someone who applies alone. Successful applicants will receive notice of their hunt dates and other information by mail. Drawing results will be posted March 14^th through May 6^th. For the youth hunt and the hunt for people with disabilities at Smithville Lake, applications should be made by phone by calling (816) 858-5718.
