The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5015, 5070, 5440, 6520 and 6670. Purcell also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6180 and that a crew would be doing maintenance on a dump truck that has an air leak. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2050, 3120, 3180, 4442 and 5320. Larson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2300, 3260 and 6150, and that a bridge rail was out on county road 2050 and would be taken care. He also said that crews would be checking signs, picking up tires along side the road and cutting trees on right of ways. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending the Region I Homeland Oversight Committee meeting Thursday afternoon in St. James. Dent County had previously submitted a bid for a 175-watt generator for $46,000 for the Red Cross emergency center. The grant was approved in the final round in December and looked for the okay at the meeting. Skiles wanted to thank Tony Floyd of Inter County for writing the original proposal for the generator. Skiles also wanted to commend the Park Service for amending their rules on firearms to comply with state laws. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the tentative budget became available Wednesday at 1:00 pm and that there will be a public hearing on the budget on Monday, February 2^nd at 7:00 pm in the courtroom at the Judicial Building. Curley reported that bids for culverts and grader blades would be opened on Thursday, January 29^th at 10:00 am. Commissioners Purcell and Larson along with Curley will be working on updating the employee policy handbook. Presiding Commissioner Skiles along with Commissioners Purcell and Larson agreed that starting Monday, January 26^th, the Commission would have an agenda to be approved at the opening of each of their Commissioner meetings to maintain better control of the meetings. Junior Adams stopped in to let the Commission know that he has heard and read things that have been said about the Parker/Waver building that he used to own. He wanted to let the Commission know that to the best of his knowledge he is not aware of any adverse problems with the building. He bought the building back in the late 70’s or early 80’s and had to gut it out all the way down to the sub-floor and walls and rebuild it back. Adams said he does not foresee any problem and does not see why it has had any complaints. The next scheduled meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Monday, January 26^th at 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public. 

In yesterday’s YWT, David C. Tune’s name was inadvertently omitted from the East Ward Aldermanic candidates. Also the candidates for the Northwood R-4 were listed under Dent-Phelps R-3. We apologize for the error. The following is a corrected account of all the candidates running for the board of alderman, hospital board and school board.

Filings for school boards, the hospital board and the City of Salem Board of Aldermen ended on Tuesday. Here is a list of those who filed. Incumbent Sheila Kunkel filed for the lone seat on the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board. The Oak Hill R-1 School District has two three-year terms available with Jessica Terrill, Tom Rushing and John Wofford having filed. At Green Forest R-2, which has two 3-year terms available, Mike Fiaoni, Carrie Wilson and Dee Moser filed for those seats. Dent-Phelps R-III had incumbents Steve Watkins and Susie Cahill file for the two 3-year terms they had available. At Northwood R-IV, incumbents Dan King and Dennis (Dee) Jessen both filed for the two 3-year terms available there. The Salem R-80 school board has three terms available, two 3-year terms and one 2-year term. Incumbents Chris Heaven and Bernie Sirois filed for the 3-year terms, as did Carrie Coffman-Snider. Incumbent Joe Howard filed for the 2-year term as did Clifton Parker. For the City of Salem, incumbent Jim Jackson filed for the East Ward Aldermanic position as did Edgar Gray Sr. and David C. Tune. In the West Ward Aldermanic race, Brad Nash, Michael E. Thompson and John R. Rostron have all filed. The Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, April 7^th.

Representative Jason Smith of Salem received his committee assignments for the 2009 legislative session this week. House Speaker Ron Richard of Joplin appointed Representative Smith to serve on four committees including the House Judiciary Committee of which Representative Smith has been a member for each of the last three sessions. In addition to his service on the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Smith will serve on the House Rural Community Development Committee, House Special Committee on Professional Registration and Licensing, House Special Committee on Emerging Issues in Animal Agriculture and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules With committee appointments complete, proposed legislation will now begin making its way through the legislative process. Legislation must be approved by the committee to which it is assigned before it can reach the House floor for debate.

The Winter Youth Basketball signups for boys and girls in the 1st through 6th grade will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The cost is $15.00 per child. These will be the only signups for the basketball program. For more information, call 729-6290.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers defeated Belle Thursday night, 71-62 and will play for fifth place Saturday afternoon at 5:00 against St. James at the St. James Tournament. C.J. Smith led the way for Salem with 21 points while Grant Gordon netted 17 and Zach Pitchford tallied 11 more. Salem is now 7-9 on the year.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host Licking tonight at the SHS Gym starting with the JV game at 6:00 and the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 7-8 overall record.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers will host Texas Tech Saturday at 12:30 at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri enters the game with a 16-3 record and 3-1 in the Big 12. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Keith Tkachuk will be the lone representative for the St. Louis Blues in the All-Star game this Sunday in Montreal. The Blues will have David Perron and Patrik Berglund participating in the Future Stars game on Saturday.

The Blues learned that defensemen Roman Polak fractured his right foot blocking shot against Chicago on January 17^th and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Funeral services for Orin Anderson Key of Harrison, Arkansas, formerly of Steelville, age 84, will be held Sunday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville.
