An accident happened on Friday, January 18
th at 8:13 in the morning at the intersection of Fourth Street and Highway 19. According to the Salem Police report, a red 1999 Ford Ranger driven by Jessey Gouldsmith of Salem was traveling south on Highway 19 and didn’t see a white 1992 Mercury Topaz driven by Jenna Homeyer of Salem that was traveling west on Fourth Street and made contact with the Mercury. 18-year old Jessey Gouldsmith suffered injuries and sought her own transportation to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday evening at the city hall council chambers. John Richards of Sho-Me Power was to speak to the board about the electrical rate increase for the city of Salem, but he did not make the meeting. Instead Mayor Gary Brown explained that Salem is to receive a 34.3% increase in the electric rate starting April 1st. That equates to about 5.562 cents per kwh. Brown was disturbed by the increase as cities in the area received from 19 to 74% increases while the electric co-ops only received from 12 to 20% increases, all from the same 25% increase in cost to Sho-Me Power from Associated Electric. Brown stated that Sho-Me said that the difference in rate increases was based on the ”load factor” in each city and for Salem in December that was 68%. Brown said that members of the Missouri Utility Alliance would be meeting at Sho-Me Power in Marshfield Friday morning at 10:00 to discuss their discontent The mayor then reported that the city received a total of $66,328.87 interest on their six month CD’s; and for the year 2007, there was a total of $1,028,156 sales tax dollars collected for the city of Salem and another $514,078 was raised for capital improvements. Alderman McDaniels said he saw the blueprints for the soccer field and wants to call a community wide meeting to find out what kind of support is out there for the construction and funding of the development. He also proposed that the city install the storm water culverts at the Salem City Park before April 1st and the board approved his request unanimously. He also reported that a dusk to dawn light is needed at the intersection of Pershing and Center Streets. Mayor Brown reported that a total of 39 headstones were damaged at the Cedar Grove Cemetery with 37 of them being turned over and two were turned sideways. He and Alderman McDaniels thanked the police for their quick response to the crime and the quick apprehension of those responsible. He reported that there were three water leaks discovered Tuesday morning and all three were repaired before the workday was over. The mayor reported that 45 people attended the Recycling Day on Saturday and they collected full dumpsters of tin cans, glass and milk jugs. He said that a recycling day will be held every third Saturday of the month and a special collection of catalogues and magazines will be held in February. Brown reported that he received an estimate from the engineers about how much the soccer field renovation might cost and he said that it was about $406,000 for the soccer fields, playground equipment area, the skateboard park and the concession stand. The large soccer field alone would cost about $96,000. He further reported that the owner of the property of Jackson Street that burned is going to rebuild beginning March 1st, and he needs to get with the attorney about the burned out property behind the 4th Street Mall concerning a public hearing. He also said that limbs and leaves were not picked up Tuesday due to the ice in the morning, and those items would be picked up today. The board approved the rezoning of the property at 601 South McArthur from Residential R-1 to Commercial, and also approved the rezoning of the property at 1101 to 1105 South McArthur from Residential R-1 to Commercial. City Attorney Mark Weaver wanted to address the board in closed session about existing and past ordinances that relate to telecommunication taxes in light of the recent statewide wireless litigation and settlement. The board approved sending Animal Control Officer Rick Raw to a training session in St. Louis on using an animal dart gun at accost of $525 for the training and $72 per night lodging from March 3rd through the 7th. The board approved the re-appointment of Rose Kinerk to the Salem Housing Authority for another four years beginning on February 15th. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session to discuss litigation.

The St. Louis Cardinals avoided arbitration and signed catcher Yadier Molina to a four-year contract on Monday with a club option for a fifth season. Molina posted a career high .275 batting average in 2007 with six home runs and 40 runs batted in. He also had a 15-game hitting streak, the longest by a Cardinals catcher since 1993.
The Missouri Tigers will try to halt their two-game losing streak when they take on Texas Tech starting at 6:30. Missouri is 11-7 on the year while Texas Tech stands at 10-7. Missouri is 1-2 in the Big 12 Conference. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Blues will continue their three game road trip before the All-Star Break tonight as they travel to the west coast and will face the Vancouver Canucks. Game time is set for 9:00 and KSMO will air the game at that time or immediately after the Missouri and Texas Tech contest. The Blues have dropped five straight games including the first game of this trip to Nashville on Monday, 6-3. The Blues will travel to San Jose tomorrow night for a battle with the Sharks starting at 9:30 also on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for William “Bill” May of Rolla, age 89, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for James Penrod of Salem, age 69, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem.
Funeral services for Alfred J. Kotschedoff of Salem, age 89, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Vini G. Williams of St. James, age 71, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services for Rogers H. (Pete) Falkenrath of Newburg, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Manor.
Funeral services for Elva Smith of St. James, age 100, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will be in the Meramec Hills Cemetery in Cuba.
