The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Prior to the meeting the Planning and Zoning board held a public hearing to rezone property located at 201 E. Margaret St. owned by Rodney Lewis from residential to commercial. This change was recommended to the Board of Aldermen and was approved. Molly Malone of Verkamp and Malone, CPA was not in attendance and will present their audit findings at a later meeting. City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported that city employees would attend a harassment and discrimination training tomorrow at the SBU campus. Alderman Kenneth Nash asked about the lights at the tennis courts being left on and Lucas explained that the lights would be turned off for the winter. Alderman Philip Giacomelli received calls regarding several items in the lawn of a residence on South Water Street. Mayor Gary Brown wanted residents to know that if they receive a phone soliciting call from Home Serve regarding purchasing insurance for water lines or a call for a security system that is being recommended by the sheriff’s department that these services are not being recommended by the City. Monday, January 28th the aldermen will hold a meeting to discuss the ordinance revisions. City Attorney William Camm Seay has discussed the recommendations and received clarifications from Sullivan Publications regarding questions that the aldermen had. Brown encouraged citizens to call their legislators regarding their Second Amendment rights on the right to bear arms due to the latest executive orders by the President. Ameren UE natural gas bills can now be paid at Country Mart. Brown reported that the height of the water tower that Alderman Nash was concerned about is 155 foot so it does not require a beacon. The board approved Resolution #2-2013 authorizing the Mayor to sign a warranty deed to the Salem Public Library property located at 102 N. Jackson Street. Attorney Seay explained that the Library property had been mistakenly deeded to the City and this ordinance would correct the deed so the library board could sell the property. The board approved the repair of the pump at the sewer treatment plant at a cost of $8,385. The city employees will install the pump. Aldermen approved the fireworks demonstration to be held at the Commons pending approval of a contract. The board then went into closed session.
Salem Area Community Betterment Association (SACBA) will hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner to honor volunteer citizens and organizations on Tuesday, February 26th. The dinner will be held at The Gathering Place, Grace Community Church at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the TCRC, the Visitors Center and from SACBA board members for $20. Nominations for the Gift of Time awards and the Gift of Time Honor Roll are sought. The categories for volunteer recognition are: Education, Community Enhancement, Arts and Culture, Youth (an adult or adult organization), Youth (a youth or youth organization), Humanitarianism, and Historic Preservation. Any citizen may nominate any individual and/or any organization that has made a significant volunteer contribution to the community during 2012. An anonymous panel of citizens will select the Gift of Time awardees. The Gift of Time awards will be presented and all nominees will be honored at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Nomination forms are available now at the Salem Library, the TCRC, The Salem News and the SACBA office at 200 N. Main. Nominations must be submitted to SACBA (Box 732, Salem, MO 65560) or judy@salemtcrc.com no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 31st.
An accident occurred at 1:45 Saturday morning in Phelps County on Highway F about a mile and a half south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 18-year old Amanda Mumma of Rolla was driving a 2003 Mazda Six westbound when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned. Mumma suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. An occupant, 18-year old David Kitchens of St. James, suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The Mazda was totaled and towed by Ron Dishman’s Towing.

Galeb Rutledge hit six 3-pointers in the game including three in the 4th quarter to help the Willow Springs Bears defeat the Salem Tigers, 60-54. Salem was led by Chad Elliott with 28 points and ten rebounds while Brady Floyd contributed 11 points. Salem is now 6-10 on the year and they will face the Mountain Grove Panthers tonight at 7:30 at the McDonald's Classic in Mountain Grove. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.
Dylan Wisdom scored 17 points as the Salem 9th Grade Boys basketball Team took 3rd place in the Willow Springs Tournament. The Tigers beat the Bears, 33-26.
T.J. Oshie's shootout goal lifted the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Monday at Bridgestone Arena. St. Louis backup goaltender Brian Elliot, who relieved starter Jaroslav Halak midway through the second period, saved all 13 shots he faced in regulation before stopping Craig Smith's wrister to open the shootout. Oshie then beat Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne with a backhand, and after Elliot saved a backhand attempt from Martin Erat, Alexander Steen sealed the win with a backhand of his own. Vladimir Tarasenko kept his torrid start going with a goal and two assists, while Andy McDonald and Alex Pietrangelo also lit the lamp for the Blues. The Blues will be in Chicago tonight at 7:30 and KSMO will bring you the third period following the Salem game.
The St. Louis Blues and defenseman Wade Redden, who hasn't played in the NHL since the 2009-10 season, have agreed to a one-year contract. The two-time All-Star has 106 goals and 450 points over 994 NHL games with the Senators and Rangers from 1996-2010.
The 22nd ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will host the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight. Missouri is 13-4 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO at 5:30, with the 2nd half on a tape-delayed basis after the Salem game.
The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar on a one-year contract for 2013, avoiding arbitration. Hochevar, who was the top pick in the 2006 draft, went 8-16 with a 5.73 ERA in 32 starts for the Royals last season. He set a career-high with 144 strikeouts. Over 132 career appearances, including 128 starts, Hochevar is 38-59 with a 5.39 ERA.
