On Saturday, January 19th at approximately 10:38 p.m., Dent County Fire protection District firefighters responded to a fire in the 500 block of East Acuff. Eight firefighters responded to the call and the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical. The firefighters remained on the scene until 11:29 pm. On Sunday, January 20th at about 11:49 pm, firefighters responded to a flu fire in the 1300 block of East 1
st Street where seven firefighters responded to the call. Upon arrival, the fire was determined to have upgraded to a structure fire. Firefighters got the fire under control at 12:23 Monday morning and remained on the scene until 1:41 a.m. On Monday at approximately 4:52 p.m., firefighters were called back to the 1300 block of East 1
st St. as the resident reported the flue had caught fire again. Twelve firefighters responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the fire was discovered in the attic of the home. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire and remained on the scene until 7:23 Monday night. Also on the 21st at approximately 4:20 p.m., firefighters responded to the 200 block of Rolla Road for a report of a grass fire. The fire reportedly started when the resident was burning trash that got out of control, and the fire was nearing the residence. Nine firefighters responded to the call. The Salem Police Department responded to this call also, and began extinguishing the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and remained on the scene until 4:31 p.m. The fire district firefighters on Monday at approximately 4:10 p.m. responded to the 700 block of Thomas Ave for a carbon monoxide call with ten firefighters responded to the call. Firefighters remained on the scene until 5:03 at which point they had to leave the scene to attend a structure fire. At approximately 5:50 pm, the firefighters returned to the carbon monoxide call at the 700 block of Thomas Ave. The cause of the CO leak was determined, the residence was ventilated and firefighters remained on the scene until 7:07 pm.
In closed session last Thursday, the Salem R-80 Board of Education added another year to Superintendent Steve Bryant’s contract. Bryant is now contracted from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2011.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington on beginning at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, John Richards with Sho-Me Power will explain the rate increase the City will be receiving from Sho-Me Power. After the approval of the agenda, Alderman Bill Riley, Mike Whitley, Jim Jackson and Jim McDaniels will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem, and Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments on various issues as well. During the reading of bills, Bill #3118 and Bill #3119, ordinances required to support the Board’s decision to rezone property at 601 South MacArthur and 1101-1105 South MacArthur both from Residential R-I to Commercial will be brought before the Board. In new and miscellaneous business, City Attorney Mark Weaver wants to discuss existing and past ordinances relating to telecommunication taxes and fees in light of the recent statewide wireless litigation and settlement agreements and any new or amended ordinances, which may be beneficial to the City. Animal Control Officer Rick Raw is requesting permission to attend a training session so that he will be qualified to use the dart gun. The Board of the Salem Housing Authority is requesting the reappointment of Rose Kinerk whose term expires February 15th. Ms. Kinerk has agreed to accept the re-appointment and her new term would start on February 16th. After the approval of bills, the Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Tigers defeated the Licking Wildcats Friday night by the score of 46-29. Salem was led in scoring by Natalie Howard with 19 points and Alison Jones with 16.
Last night, the Sullivan Lady Eagles fell behind 27-26 in the fourth quarter before scoring the next eight straight points and holding on to beat the Salem Lady Tigers, 38-32. Natalie Howard led the Lady Tigers with 21 points and six rebounds. Salem fall to 13-4 on the year with the loss and will face the Waynesville Lady Tigers Thursday at 6:00.
Alexander Radulov posted two goals and an assist, as the Nashville Predators swept a home-and-home set from the St. Louis Blues with a 6-3 drubbing at the Sommet Center. Brad Boyes, Dan Hinote and Keith Tkachuk tallied for the Blues, who have dropped a season-high five straight. Manny Legace allowed five goals on 26 shots in defeat. The Blues will be in Vancouver on Wednesday night at 9:00.

Funeral services for William “Bill” May of Rolla, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for James Penrod of Salem, age 69, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening.
Funeral services for Alfred J. Kotschedoff of Salem, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Vini G. Williams of St. James, age 71, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services for Rogers H. (Pete) Falkenrath of Newburg, age 91, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Manor.
