The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held a special closed meeting Friday morning to discuss hiring a new electric superintendent. The board had three applicants for the position and the board voted to employ former superintendent Larry Majors for the position. Majors will have to pass a physical before he begins his duties next Thursday, January 25th. The special meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened Friday in Dent County on Route ZZ about 20 miles south of Salem at 11:30 in the morning. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by 25-year old Ryan Kahler of Salem, who failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. Suffering moderate injuries was Kahler and an occupant, 21-year old Christopher Plumb of Salem. Both were taken to the Salem Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The vehicle was totaled in the accident and was left at the Salem Police Department. Kahler was cited for driving while revoked, careless and imprudent driving, driving while intoxicated, and failure to wear a seat belt.

An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 5:15 in Dent County on Route B about ten miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol, 47-year old Ronnie Norris of Salem driving a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, lost control of the car on the ice covered roadway, went off the right side of the road, overturned and struck a tree. Suffering moderate injuries was 22-year old Genie A. Perkins of Salem who was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The vehicle was totaled in the accident and everyone was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

An accident happened early Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 55 in Jefferson County about 2.3 miles south of Highway 61. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 24-year old Stephanie Roth of St. Peters, lost control of her vehicle on the icy, wet pavement. The Grand Am rotated 180 degrees and was facing southbound in the northbound lane when the left side of the Pontiac struck the left side of a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 70-year old Ola Franklin of Salem. Both vehicles came to rest in the median. Franklin and a passenger in her vehicle, 46-year old Charles E. Billingsley of Edgar Springs, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the Jefferson Memorial Hospital by the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance. The Cavalier sustained moderate damages while the Grand Am sustained extensive damage. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held its regular meeting Thursday at the district administrative offices. Superintendent Steve Bryant recognized the board members for the job they do with a plaque in honor of Board Recognition Week. He went over the board flings where Greg Nash, Wade Jadwin and Gina Taylor-Mowery have filed for the two 3-year positions, and Veronica Hambacker and Jimmy Williams have filed for the 1-year term remaining on the term of Mark Nash who resigned his seat when he moved from the district. Bryant updated the board on the teacher-in service at Grace Community Church held January 2nd, updated the board on the trial over the state’s foundation formula to fund schools, and he went over updates or planned updates at the district. Bryant reported to the board that KSMO Radio donated the money for the materials for the building of an additional media box at the high school gym. The board heard about the internal alignment in the area of social studies, then heard the program evaluation on the At-Risk and Alternative programs including the GED Options and Credit Recovery program, and alternative classrooms. The GED program has had 42 students at the beginning of the year but 11 dropped. So far, ten 12th graders have recovered seven credits, ten 11th graders have recovered 10 credits, and three students have passed their GED already. They also heard from Karen Jones on the Parents as Teachers program which currently has 34 families with children 0-3 years of age, and 10 families with children 3-5. The board accepted the retirement of Family Consumer Science Teacher Linda Loman at the end of the school year, and they accepted the immediate resignations of the Special Ed Para-Professional Aide Laura Weiss-Chester, bus driver Connie Bacon and food service member Sharon Hogan. After going over a number of board policies, the board set the graduation date for Friday. May 18th. In closed session the BOE employed Kelly Tinker as a junior high Special Education Para-professional; Becky Stokes as a Bus Driver, and Robin Wells in the Central Office to do the payroll and insurance.  The BOE also evaluated Superintendent Bryant and voted to extend his contract. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers dropped a 76-54 decision to Waynesville on Friday to fall back to 8-8 on the year. Taylor Sirois was the only Tiger in double figures with 18 points. The Tigers were to face the Fatima Comets Saturday night in the third place game, but the contest was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be rescheduled at a later date. The next game for the Tigers will be Friday at St. James.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers improved to 14-2 on the year with a 61 to 34 win over the Licking Lady Wildcats Friday night. Salem was led in scoring by Kirsten Stephens and Allison Jones as they each tallied 19 points. Natalie Howard added 11 points for Salem while Hannah Kettner netted 10 points. Salem will travel to Sullivan to face the Lady Eagles tonight starting at 6:00. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO starting at about 7:10 with Tiger Talk and Coach Phillip Karr.

Manny Legace made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season as the St. Louis Blues headed into the All-Star break with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion. Bill Guerin netted the lone goal of the game with Martin Rucinsky getting an assist for the Blues, who have won three straight and six of their last seven games. Guerin has 20 goals on the season. They also moved to 21-5 all-time at San Jose. St. Louis has a 19-21-8 record while San Jose holds a 32-16 mark at the break. The Blues went 3-0-1 on this four game west coast trip. The Blues will host Detroit on Friday and Nashville on Saturday.

Thomas Jones ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns as the Chicago Bears defeated the New Orleans Saints, 39-14, in the NFC Championship Game at Soldier Field.

The Indianapolis Colts edged the New England Patriots, 38-34, in the AFC Championship Game at the RCA Dome as Peyton Manning and the Colts dug out of an 18-point hole and fought back to tie it on three separate occasions before taking their first lead of the game with one minute left on a three-yard run by Joseph Addai.
