The Salem Board of Aldermen met for their regular meeting Tuesday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. City Administrator Ray Walden and Water and Sewer Department Superintendent Jack Emory presented a bid from Smith and Edwards Construction for a skirt replacement project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The aldermen approved the only bid received for a total of $23,350 for this budgeted expense. In the City Administrator’s report, Walden noted that he recently attended an MRPC meeting where transportation funding was discussed. The Special Street Fund and toll roads are part of the discussion with legislators on ways to increase funds for road repairs. Walden reported the sales tax collected for year-to-date totals $97,452.89, which is 61% of the budgeted projected amount. The Capital Improvements Sales Tax is also at 61% of the budget totaling $48,726.63 collected. Walden is working on the park sales tax initiative with the Park Board and Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash. City Clerk Mary Happel reported Tuesday was the deadline to file for the municipal election. Ken Nash, Joe Shelton and Chad Heithold filed for the West Ward Alderman seat and Dr. Haydn Powell filed for the East Ward Alderman seat. Mayor J.J. Tune said he would like the Finance Committee and Utility Committees to meet soon to discuss budget issues. Tune would like to create a balanced budget where the only money spent is the same as the money coming in. Electric Superintendent Brian Johns requested approval from the board for repairs to an electric department tree trimming truck. The electric department has 6 trucks that were recently tested and all passed except for the tree trimming truck that needed the leveling cables brought up to date for compliance. The repair cost of $7,720.07 was approved. The board approved a Body Camera Policy for the Police Department. The videos captured on the cameras will be saved for 30 days while the department has discretion to keep some recordings for a longer period. With no further business at hand, the board went into closed session to discuss contracts.
