The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released a report that on Thursday, January 17th, at 11:30 a.m., the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a complaint of an incident, which was reported to have occurred January 16
th at approximately 1:50 in the afternoon. The location was property off of Dent County Road 325B. It was reported that two employees of the Dent County Assessor's Office, while completing Field Reviews, were confronted and threatened after being stopped by a resident as they were leaving the property. The resident was interviewed and information was taken for a report.
Senator Frank Barnitz of Lake Spring has earned an appointment to serve on the Senate Education Committee. The committee deals with legislation and issues affecting elementary and secondary schools in the state as well as higher education. The Senate Education Committee reviews legislation and hears testimony on proposed bills before deciding whether or not to send the legislation to the full Senate for debate. Past legislation handled by the committee includes measures creating enriching programs for elementary and secondary education as well as funding institutes of higher education. As a father of three, Senator Barnitz is familiar with the achievements and challenges of the education system. He spent six years serving on the Dent-Phelps School Board, which provides a background on the inner workings of local school districts. His work with youth through 4-H, the Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee, and the Agriculture Leaders of Tomorrow will contribute to his knowledge of helpful programs, especially in rural and richly agricultural areas.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education Thursday evening in closed session selected Luke Heithold to represent Salem R-80 in the Dr. Darrell “Jack” Holley MUSIC scholarship. MUSIC stands for the Missouri United School Insurance Council and is the Salem R-80 major insurance carrier. Also during closed session, John McColloch, the current junior high assistant principal, was promoted to the position of the junior high building principal for the 2008-2009 school year. The Board also wanted to thank Larry Maxwell for his six years of service to the district and wish him well in his retirement at the end of the year. The meeting was then adjourned.
Captain Randy Becker, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that on Wednesday, January 23rd, the Driver Examination Station in Salem will close at noon, so that personnel may attend required training. Examination hours will return to normal in Salem the following week.
The Dent County License Bureau will be open normal business hours today on Martin Luther King Day for your needs.
Senator Frank Barnitz announced that District Legislative Assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna would continue her listening posts in January at locations throughout the 16th Senate District. On Thursday, January 24th, Rowden will be at the Phelps County Commission in Rolla from 9:00 to 11:00 and then at the City Hall in St. James from 12:30 to 2:00. Those who cannot make it to the listening posts can contact Rowden in the district office by calling (573) 201-6207.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers won the St. James Tournament for the fourth time in the last six years as they defeated the Sullivan Eagles in the championship game in overtime, 73–65. Salem was led in scoring by Zach Pitchford with 23 points including seven 3-pointers in the contest. Taylor Sirois netted 19 points in the game and hauled down 8 rebounds before fouling out. Cody Wofford scored 15 points as did C.J. Smith with all 15 of his points coming in the second half including seven in overtime. Salem reached the championship game with a 64 to 45 win over Fatima Friday night. In that game, C.J. Smith scored 24 points to lead the Tigers who also had double digit scoring from Sirois with 14 points, Wofford with 12 points and Pitchford with 11. Salem improves to 13-5 on the year and will be off until Friday night when they host St. James.
Two Tigers were named to the All-Tournament Team at St. James. C.J. Smith was honored as was Taylor Sirois who was also named the MVP of the tournament.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will face the Sullivan Lady Eagles tonight in a pre-curser of what might be a district matchup. The JV game will start at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO right after the Blues game as well as on www.ksmoradio.com.
Mario Chalmers scored 18 points and third- ranked Kansas remained one of only two unbeaten teams in Division I play with a 76-70 win over Missouri. Stefhon Hannah had 23 points and six assists to pace Missouri, which has lost two straight. Leo Lyons had 10 points for the Tigers, who had their Mizzou Arena record 13-game home court winning streak broken.
Scott Nichol had a pair of shorthanded goals as the Nashville Predators beat up the St. Louis Blues, 5-2, in the opener of a home-and-home set at Scottrade Center. Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist and Brad Boyes also scored for the Blues, who have dropped four straight. The Blues face the Predators today at 5:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Rdaio.
Laurence Maroney ran for 122 yards and a touchdown as New England disposed of a banged-up San Diego team, 21-12, in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium. The Pats became the first 18-0 team in NFL history and are now just one step away from completing the second perfect season in the Super Bowl era.
Lawrence Tynes' 47-yard field goal with 12:25 left in overtime lifted the New York Giants over the Green Bay Packers, 23-20, in the NFC Championship Game at frigid Lambeau Field. Tynes had a chance to win it in regulation but he badly hooked a 36-yard attempt as time expired.

Funeral services for Winford Robert Pace of Salem, age 89, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Lutheran Church.
Funeral services for Betty Sheehan of Louisville Kentucky formerly of Salem, age 65, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Graveside services for Paul S. “Sonny” Baum of Salem, age 68, will be held Tuesday at 3:30 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Second Baptist Church in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home in Cuba.
Funeral services for William "Bill" May of Rolla, formerly of Independence, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for James Penrod of Salem, age 69, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening.
Funeral services for Alfred J. Kotschedoff of Salem, age 89, will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Vini G. Williams of St. James, age 71, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Funeral services for Joe R. Lacewell of Vichy, age 58, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
Funeral services for Vernon Major Pollard of Rolla, age 77, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
