An accident happened Thursday evening at 7:19 in Phelps County on Interstate 44 at the 187.2 mile marker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2015 Kenworth Tractor Trailer Unit traveling eastbound and being driven by 41-year old Kent Cook of Hammond, Il., was changing lanes and struck a 2006 Pontiac Grad Prix being driven eastbound by 21-year old Michael Gearhart of Salem. Suffering moderate injuries were passengers in the Grad Prix: 46-year old Lana Akins of Salem and 18-year old Landra Botkin of Salem. Both were transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident except for Botkin. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing, while the Kenworth had only minor damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education met for their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. Superintendent Steve Carvajal said he would like to have a Board Recognition Night at the Salem High School Basketball game on February 3rd. He said only two people have signed up for the two open slots on the board and they are incumbents Chris Heavin and Carrie Snyder. The last day to sign up for the school board position is Tuesday. January 20th. Carvajal said the school is still OK with their school calendar after the last two snow days to go along with the three days of starting late and one missed day in December. The building principals then gave their reports. Kriste Crocker gave the Preschool and Kindergarten SMART progress from William Lynch Elementary and said that students of the month were Clara Ball, Bailey Stewart and Nevaeh Lee. Melanie Wisdom gave the report for the Upper Elementary and said the students of the month were Makynna Thompson, Lindsey White, Raegan Neff and Caleb Land. Wisdom said the school started a “Pennies for Paper” campaign to assist the local food pantries in getting toothbrushes, toilet paper and toothpaste. She reported that DARE graduation will be held February 5th and the next round for the DESE Statewide Collaborative Initiative assessment data is due on the 23rd of this month with writing being this year’s focus. Scott Roberts reported on the middle school and said the students of the month were Alyvia Lunn, John Mysklinski, Harly Coffman, Brady Pierce, Destiny Remster and Tyler Dooley. He said a new Middle School Final Exams Exemption Policy has been approved by the staff and it will be adopted in May. He also congratulated 8th grade science teacher Debbie Ritchey who had an article published in the MSTA magazine “School and Community” that highlighted the Salem Middle School Traveling Teacher Award. John Smith congratulated the students of the month: Sam Swindell and Brooke Rogers; and he said all eight students who have taken the HiSet this year have been successful. He said a Parent Financial Aid Informational meeting would be held January 27th from 6:00 to 8:00 in the High School Library. Smith stated that Salem would host the SCA Conference Quiz Bowl Tournament this year on January 22nd at 6:00 and the Girls Softball team was selected to the Academic All-State Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.8. Smith went on to say the FFA Degree Ceremony would be Thursday, January 29th at 7:00 at the City Hall Auditorium and Natalie Leathers would be singing with the All-State choir on January 31st. The board approved allowing Sarah Brown, a non-resident home school student, to take Advanced Math at the Salem High School. Her family will pay a pro-rated portion of tuition for the one-hour they are in school. The board accepted the resignations of William Lynch Elementary Aide Juliana Bermudez immediately, plus 8th grade math and algebra teacher Rona Keniston, elementary school music teacher David Jett and High School Math teacher Weston Hines at the end of the school year. The board went into closed session to discuss personnel and hired John McCulloch as the new Superintendent with a 7-0 vote to replace Steve Carvajal. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers could not hold on to a 15-point third quarter lead, missed a last second shot for the win and finally lost in overtime to the Mountain View-Liberty Eagles Friday night by the score of 72-63. Kobe Mead scored 22 points to lead the Tigers followed by 17 by Zayne Kyser. Salem falls to 6-6 on the year and 0-1 in the SCA. They will play tonight at the St. James Tournament against Sullivan who they beat just six days ago. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host the Rolla Lady Bulldogs tonight at the SHS gym starting with the JV game at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. Salem enters the game with an 11-3 record.

Brian Elliott made 27 saves for his third shutout of the season and the St. Louis Blues beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 on Saturday night. Kevin Shattenkirk, Alexander Steen and T.J. Oshie scored for the Blues, who were coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to Detroit on Thursday. They are 4-0-1 on a seven-game home stand. The Blues will host Colorado tonight starting at 7:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after the Salem Tigers Basketball game.

Armani Moore finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Tennessee Volunteers knocked off the Missouri Tigers, 59-51, in SEC play at Mizzou Arena. Namon Wright led Missouri (7-10, 1-3) in scoring with 13 points. Keith Shamburger and Johnathan Williams III each finished with eight points and six rebounds apiece. The Missouri Tigers will be at Texas A&M Wednesday night at 5:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with pitchers Louis Coleman and Tim Collins for the 2015 season, avoiding arbitration.

The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to terms with catcher Tony Cruz and outfielder Peter Bourjos on one-year contracts avoiding arbitration. Only Jon Jay remains arbitration eligible.

Funeral services for Sherry L. Fann of Salem, age 47, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 Tuesday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sherry Fann Memorial Fund.

Funeral services for Marjorie H. Delcour of Forsyth, formerly of Salem, age 91, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Graveside services for Howard Atchison of Salem, age 59, will be held Wednesday, January 21st at 11:00 at the Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 21st from 10 to 11 in the morning at Fox Funeral Home in Licking. 

Funeral services for Lorean Davis of St. James, age 91, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 AM until service time. Interment will be in the Highgate Baptist Cemetery.

Funeral services for Frieda Ann Davidsmeyer of Salem, age 86, will be held Wednesday at Noon at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Juanita Jeffery of Rolla, age 87, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Mt. Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Melbourne, Arkansas. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Mt. Olive, Arkansas.

Funeral services for Hazel Dean Welch of Salem will be held Monday at 3:30 at the Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis. Visitation will be from 2:00 until the time of service. Interment will be Tuesday at 11:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent Count Memorial Chapel.
