The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Friday, January 6th at 7:04 in the evening, an officer stopped a vehicle for an investigation of a missing vehicle. The Investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year old Davisville male for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was issued summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, January 9th at 7:05 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of East Third Street in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown entered a residence and took multiple pieces of clothing. On Tuesday, January 10th at 5:20 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of East Fourth Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown took a purse and contents valued at $75 from the front yard of a residence. Later that night at 9:42, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 33-year old Salem male for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, January 11th at 11:44 that night, an officer was dispatched to the 500 block of South Askins in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that person or persons unknown entered a silver 2005 Pontiac Sunfire and took property valued at $112. On Thursday, January 12th at 7:19 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took merchandise valued $2,160. Later that night at 11:30, an officer transported a 34-year old Salem female to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the district offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and consent agenda will be communications. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf will conduct a Board recognition, and then address the Board filings. There will then be a PBS presentation and the Social Studies EOC scores. There will be a 6-month budget comparison, an update on the superintendent search, a MSBA Board update video, discuss the Junior High Football Cooperative and a Judson/Young Foundation donation. In new business, the Board will consider Board policy GBH, the Board will address resignations and also consider a Resolution to support Missouri Vision project. The monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

During its regular meeting on January 4^th, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission voted to change the limits of a project on Route 21 in Reynolds County. The project will include adding four-foot shoulders and side and centerline rumble strips from Route 106 to Route 34 on Route 21 in Reynolds County. The original project also included an overlay, shoulders and rumble strips; however, that project would have started north of Ellington, and the community felt the best location for the improvements needed to start south of Ellington. MoDOT Southeast District Engineer Mark Shelton indicated that Route 21 south of Ellington does carry a higher volume of traffic, including large trucks, making this the right decision for Missourians. Shelton said funding for the improvements was added to the fiscal year 2014 budget, and work will begin that spring or summer with completion by the fall. The Dent County One Ton Weight Loss Challenge Committee would like to announce the team losing the highest percentage of body weight for December. The team was "Fierce" who lost 48 pounds or 3.8%. This team's captain is Nancy Wethy. Each months winning team will receive a traveling trophy to designate their accomplishment.  To date the teams have lost a total of 631 of the 2,000 that is needed to complete the challenge. Monthly activities are planned to help participants realize their weight loss goals. For January there will be Line Dancing on Saturday, January 21st held at the Jr. High gym beginning at 2:00 pm.  Also in January teams are encouraged to participate in the Relay for Life Zumbathon scheduled for Saturday, January 28th from 8:00 am to 12:00 (noon) at the Salem Upper Elementary School.  In February a Bowling Tournament is planned for Saturday, February 18^th beginning at 1:00 PM at the Salem Bowling Center. Teams of five can register by calling 729-8163.  The cost is $15 per person. All activities are open to the public, you don't have to be a member of the One Ton Weight Loss Challenge to participate. Bill Black, Superintendent at the Fort Smith National Historic Site in Fort Smith, Arkansas, has been selected as the interim superintendent of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways for the next 120 days (4 months). An Indiana native, Black graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Wildlife Management. He is married to Judi, a first grade teacher with the Fort Smith Public Schools. They have a grown son and daughter.
