On Sunday, January 16
th at about 8:00 pm, The Rolla Police Department received notification from an alarm monitoring service of a panic alarm at Sooter Inn, located in the 2000 block of North Highway 63. The Department then received a call from an employee at Sooter Inn who reported that the business had been robbed. Reportedly, two male suspects entered the business and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk complied and the suspects were able to obtain the money from the business. The two suspects then ran out of the business and across highway 63. Responding law enforcement officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspects. The clerk was unharmed by the suspects and no weapons were displayed. At this time, the amount of money taken is not being disclosed. The subjects are described as a white male wearing a dark colored ski mask, tan jacket, and blue jeans, and a white male wearing a dark colored ski mask, black jacket, and blue jeans. Anyone with any information regarding the robbery, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Rolla Police Department by calling (573) 308-1213.
Three fire departments battled a fire Monday night on Highway 68 North that totally destroyed the home of Brian and Toni Cahill. They lost everything in the fire and really need three cribs for their triplets that are age two. They are also looking for clothing for their other children that include a girl, age 4, and boys from 6 to 12 years of age. The Salem Sesquicentennial Committee is sponsoring a semi-formal “Snow Ball” dance to be held this Saturday night at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. There will be a DJ with dancing, a video with 2010 events and photo props will be available to commemorate the event. The ONCRC will be decorated with a snow and ice theme. Dress for men should be suits and ladies should wear a cocktail dress. Tickets are still available for $20 at the ONCRC and at the Salem TCRC. For more information, call 729-0029.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a workshop, called Mayor Gary Brown, on Thursday, January 20th at City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 1:30 to discuss maintenance and fuel logs. The workshop of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
There will be a CBCO blood drive in Salem Friday at Salem Wood Products from 11:00 until 5:00. You must weight at least 110 pounds, be in generally good health and present an ID.
If you’re an aspiring writer, and looking for help writing and getting your book published you will be interested in a workshop “The Basics of Writing and Publishing Your Book”, for aspiring writers with some prior writing experience, and will be taught by author and publisher Sharon Jeffus. This workshop about writing and publishing books gives information on the basics of writing as well as getting your book ready for publication, promoting your book, and where to send your book. Jeffus is a graduate of John Brown University and has a B.S.S.E. in Art Education, a certification to teach English from the University of Arkansas, and has written over 20 books in conjunction with her nationally known company Visual Manna located in Salem Missouri. Some of the topics this workshop will cover include: Choosing a Title; Writing a Preface or Introduction; Developing a Table of Contents; Questions to Ask When Writing A Book; Writing the Draft; Understanding printing and print runs and copy prices; Evaluating costs carefully and more. This six-hour workshop will be held at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road on Thursday, January 20th from 6:00-9:30 PM and there is a cost. The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission awarded a project to resurface Route 72, in Phelps and Dent Counties during it's January 12th meeting. The project includes 9.330 miles of resurfacing from County Road 5220 to County Road 209, and was awarded to N.B. West Contracting Company, of Brentwood, Mo. at a total cost of $1,406,131. Dustin Sercl scored 16 points to help lead Salem to a 53-47 upset of the Rolla Bulldogs in the St. James Tournament. The Tigers also received 12 points from Jacob Kettner and 11 more from Jonathan Hambacker. Salem is now 3-9 on the year and they will take on Hillsboro Friday night at 6:30 in the tournament semi-final.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers beat the Owensville Ducthgirls by the score of 34-30 to go to 7-8 on the year. The Tigers were led in scoring by Jennifer Herndon with 15 points. The Lady Tigers will host Licking Friday night.
Erik Johnson scored with 6:47 left in the third period and the St. Louis Blues held on for a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at the Scottrade Center. Patrik Berglund also tallied for St. Louis, which recovered from a 4-2 loss at San Jose on Saturday and have won two of three after dropping five straight. Jaroslav Halak was steady between the pipes, stopping 26-of-27 shots to pick up the win. The Blues will host Detroit Thursday night.
The St. Louis Blues activated forward T.J. Oshie from injured reserve on Tuesday. Oshie has missed 31 games since being felled by a broken left ankle against Columbus back on November 10.
The St. Louis Rams named former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels the club's offensive coordinator on Tuesday. McDaniels went 11-17 in one-plus seasons at the helm before he was fired on December 6th with the Broncos at 3-9. Prior to his recent stint in Denver, the 34-year-old McDaniels spent three seasons as offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots.
Gil Meche is done pitching in the major leagues, announcing his retirement on Tuesday at the age of 32. Meche struggled with shoulder injuries the last two seasons and apparently was not interested in undergoing surgery to remedy the problem. The 22nd overall pick in the 1996 draft made at least 23 starts in seven of his 10 big-league seasons. He posted an 11-8 record and a 4.48 earned-run average in his sixth year with the Mariners in 2006, and then signed a lucrative five-year deal with the Royals.

Funeral services for Dale Carl of St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Viburnum, age 73, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Viburnum.
Funeral services for Lee Southards of Salem, age 80, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Mount Hermon Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Mount Hermon Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Mount Hermon Cemetery or the American Heast Association.
Henry Earl “Hank” Harper, Jr. of Salem, age 72, passed away January 16
th. There will be no services for Mr. Harper. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
