An accident occurred at 6:25 Monday morning in Dent County on Route M about two miles west of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by 40-year old Brian Walker of Salem was traveling northbound on Route M. The Dodge traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Walker suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Durango was totaled and removed from the scene by Lucas Garage.

An accident happened at 12:30 Monday afternoon in Dent County on County Road 4160 about one mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Dodge Durango driven by 29-year old Amy Brummitt of Salem was traveling westbound on county road 4160. Brummitt, traveling at high rate of speed, lost control and the Dodge overturned. Brummitt and a passenger, 32-year old Curtis Brummitt, both suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Durango was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

This past weekend in Jefferson City at the 26^th Midwest Bluegrass Music Awards Convention, fiddle player Gerald Jones of Salem was named the SPBGMA Fiddle Performer of the Year. Jones, a member of the band “Men of the Week,” celebrated along with his band members who were then named the Traditional Bluegrass Band of the Year. Another honor was bestowed on the group when the lead singer of the band, C.J. Lewandowski, was named the Entertainer of the Year. Jones, who is the senior member of the group, has tasted success before when he was part of the group “Midnight Flight” three years ago when they were named the Midwest Traditional Bluegrass Band of the Year; and also 26 years ago when he was a member of the Downstate Ramblers. Gerald was also voted the 1984 Bluegrass Fiddler of the Year with the Downstate Ramblers at the SPBGMA National Convention and Awards Show held in Nashville, TN. The “Men of the Week” are comprised of Jones, Lewandowski, Leevon DeCourley, Steven Lawson and Andrew Dye.

The Dent County Historical Society will hold their first 2010 speaker series event tonight at 6:00 at the Pizza Inn meeting room. Businessman and philanthropist Wayne Gott will be the speaker. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their regularly meeting at the City Hall tonight starting at 7:00. After the roll call, Terry Cates of Integrity Engineering, Inc. will discuss the possibility of the city applying for a CDBG grant to correct storm water issues occurring between Third Street and Route J. The Salem Housing Authority has already provided the engineering study. After the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments, then report on the Utility Committee Meeting held on January 12^th, and report on the State Audit. Aldermen Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash, and Brad Nash will discuss miscellaneous items concerning the city. The introduction and reading of Bills 3186 and 3187 will be heard. Bill #3186 is an ordinance that is required to annex the Phil and Ruth Krueger property at the corner of Dilworth and Franklin into the City limits. Bill #3187 is an ordinance to authorize the mayor to execute an agreement between the city and Salem High School 2010 Project Graduation Committee for services provided to the city by Project Graduation. In new and miscellaneous business, City Clerk Mary Happel will present budget adjustments and present bills for approval. Also Bill Dobbs of the Housing Authority will have his term expire on February 15^th, and their board recommends that Mr. Dobbs be reappointed for a term of four years effective February 16^th. Mr. Dobbs has stated that he would accept this reappointment. The Board will then vote to go into closed session. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen meeting is open to the public.

Today is the last day to file for numerous positions to be determined during the April 6th Municipal Election. Two aldermen from Salem and the mayoral seat may be filed for and the local school districts will fill board positions. Two hospital directors and one fire district director also will be elected. The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the Salem Community Center located at 606 North McGrath Lane beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the last meeting along with disbursements, there will then be reports including financial reports, the water testing reports bookkeeping reports and the President’s report. The Board will then discuss any business that may come before the Board. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County is open to the public.
